Women’s volleyball falls twice during Webber Tri-Match

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 26, 2019) – Webber International University women's volleyball hosted a Webber Tri-Match during Homecoming Weekend 2019, but unfortunately the Warriors lost twice, falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-11) in Sun Conference action against Florida Memorial University before being swept by nationally-recognized Trinity Christian College (Ill.) 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-10) in a nonconference match on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

In the first match of the day against Florida Memorial, Webber broke a 17-17 tie in the first set with a 5-0 run featuring three kills by Samantha Davila and two other kills from Kalameli Matautia and Svenja Koenig to jump ahead 22-17.

The Lions closed the gap to two twice at 22-20 and 23-21 before a kill by Brianda Valdez made it 24-21, and then FMU got to within one at 24-23 before another kill by Matautia ended it and gave the Warriors their only set victory of the day.

After falling behind by six at 20-14 in the second set against FMU, Webber got back to within three at 20-17 and then again at 21-18 after a kill by Matautia, but unfortunately the Lions answered with three straight points to push their lead back to six at 24-18.

The third set against the Lions saw the Warriors lead 19-16 before five straight points by FMU made it a 21-19 Lions' edge. Webber got back to within one twice at 21-20 and 22-21, both times on kills by Matautia, but three more points in a row by FMU gave the Lions the 2-1 set advantage as FMU cruised to victory in set number four by hitting over .430 percent.

Recording the third double-double of her senior season with 14 kills and 13 digs was Matautia. She was followed in the two categories by Davila with a career-high six kills, Madelyn Glouner with six digs, Jessica Terry with five digs and Koenig with five kills and five digs.

Valdez and Laura Embry had 14 and 12 assists, respectively.

Impressively, the Warriors set a season-high in blocks against the Lions with 14 as a team. Individually, Salla Rautiainen, Glouner and Koenig all finished with six blocks while Davila and Swey Brown both had three. It was a career-high in blocks for Glouner and Brown and was a season-high for Rautiainen, Koenig and Davila.

In the final match of the day against a strong Trinity Christian team that is currently receiving votes in the 2019 NAIA Women's Volleyball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, Webber battled very hard in set number one and led 17-16 before an 8-0 run by the Trolls made it 24-17.

In the second set, Webber again had a chance with a late lead as a kill by Brown made it a 20-19 Warriors' advantage. Unfortunately, Webber again could not close it out as two attack errors by the Warriors marked the end of the set and brought about a third set in which the Warriors again allowed the opposition to hit over .430 percent for the second time on the day.

The Warriors were led in the night cap by Valdez with 12 assists, Glouner with 10 digs, Koenig with nine kills and a .316 attack percentage, and Embry with three service aces. Glouner also had a very strong five blocks, giving her a combined 11 blocks on the day and at least five blocks in three straight matches this week.

Webber is now 7-16 overall and 3-10 in The Sun Conference on the season while FMU is 16-9 and 9-4 and Trinity Christian is 20-7.

With only three matches remaining in the regular season, next up for the Warriors will be back-to-back road matches at St. Thomas University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, followed by a tough battle at the College of Coastal Georgia at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6.
