Warriors suffer first home loss of 2019 season during Homecoming Weekend

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 26, 2019) – The main athletic event of Webber International University's Homecoming Weekend 2019 was Warrior football hosting No. 12 Keiser University on the second varsity football game ever on the new Warrior Turf Field. Unfortunately, the Warriors let up a 66-yard interception returned for a touchdown early in the first quarter and fell behind 21-0 before ultimately losing by a score of 48-7.

It was the first home defeat of the 2019 season for Webber, which fell below .500 overall at 3-4 and dropped back to .500 in the Mid-South Conference Sun Division at 2-2. It was also the Warriors' second straight loss in the Sun Division as Keiser improved to an impressive 7-0 overall, 4-0 in the division and 4-0 in road games.

After the team-best fourth interception of the season by Jamon Jones, Webber's lone score of the game came on a four-yard rush by running back Davonte Williams to make it 21-7 with eight minutes left in the second quarter. It was the team-best seventh total touchdown of the year by Williams, a sophomore from Tampa, Florida.

From there, the Seahawks added three more touchdowns from quarterback Eli Mathews in the final three minutes of the half, including a 42-yard hail marry pass with time expiring to put Keiser up 41-7 at the break.

In all, Mathews had a Keiser school-record five touchdown passes at the half on only nine completed passes. It was Mathews' eighth straight game with at least one touchdown dating back to last season as he also surpassed the 3,000-career passing yards mark in his career. Additionally, the 48 points scored by the Seahawks' offense as a whole was a new school record for Keiser as well.

Williams, meanwhile, finished with 129 rushing yards on 21 attempts for the Warriors, good for an average of 6.1 yards per rush. He also added five catches for 30 yards receiving.

For the Webber defense, Amin Gilbert finished with nine tackles and was followed by Colton Cormier with eight. Next was Johnny Hernandez and Nathan Johnson with six tackles apiece while Johnson added 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack and Travonte Haynie also had a tackle for loss.

In addition to Jones' second-quarter interception, Trent Peacock had his first pick of the year on the first play of the fourth quarter.

Another positive for the Warrior defense was holding Keiser's Marques Burgess to only 39 rushing yards, breaking his streak of three straight games with over 100 yards on the ground.

The Keiser defense, however, sacked the Warriors five times, tying Keiser's school record for sacks in a single game, made nine tackles for loss, and for the fourth straight contest, forced three turnovers.

Head Football Coach Kelly Scott said, "We did not play very good as a team today, and we need to regroup and get ready for next week."

Next up for Webber football, which is now 0-3 on the season against nationally-ranked teams in the NAIA, will be another tough matchup against a top-25 team as the Warriors square off against No. 19 Southeastern University at 7 p.m. under the lights in Lakeland, Florida, on Saturday, November 2. Webber's 2019 Senior Day, which also marks the end of the regular season, will take place at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, against Warner University on the new Warrior Turf Field.
