Women’s soccer earns second straight 2-1 win

HIALEAH, Fla. (October 23, 2019) – In what was its final nonconference match of the 2019 regular season, two late goals by seniors Megan Warner and Sienna Scully lifted the Webber International University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Florida National University on Wednesday afternoon in Hialeah, Florida.

After only five shots over the first 70 minutes of action for the Warriors, the visiting team finally broke the 0-0 tie as junior Leah Borders found Warner for her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 72nd minute.

A little bit over 12 minutes later, Warner assisted on the first goal of the season by Scully to give the Warriors the two-goal advantage they would desperately need as FNU got itself on the scoreboard only a minute and a half later.

Now with eight goals and four assists on the year, Warner leads the Warriors with 20 points and is top-11 in points in The Sun Conference. Borders, meanwhile, is tied with Warner with four assists and is second on the squad with 12 total points.

Warner finished with a team-high four shots, three of which were on goal, while Scully finished with three shots overall and two shots on goal. Webber's other two shots came from Borders and sophomore Emilie Velez.

The Warriors were outshot 15-9 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal, but a strong effort by the Webber defense kept FNU off the scoreboard for over 85 minutes.

Freshman goalkeeper Natalie Bartek played all 90 minutes and made six saves to improve her record between the pipes to 4-1.

Head Women's Soccer Coach Brian Fallon said following the win, "It was another heartfelt game where we just managed to grind it out and in the end, win the match. Overall, it was good to see our players play so hard and earn themselves another 'W'."

Entering its final week of regular-season matches starting on Saturday, October 26, on the road at SCAD Savannah (6-5-1 overall, 3-2-1 TSC) at 12 p.m., Webber's record now stands at 6-5-1 overall and 2-5 in The Sun Conference as the Warriors will look to make a push for the postseason.

In addition to its meeting with SCAD, the Warriors' other matches to close out the regular season will come first on Warrior Field in Webber's home finale against the University of South Carolina Beaufort (7-6, 3-3) at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, October 30, followed by the regular-season finale on the road at St. Thomas University (7-3-1, 4-1-1) at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
