Men’s soccer bested by Johnson & Wales

BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 5, 2019) – After a goal very late in the first half by Johnson & Wales University, the Webber International University men's soccer team tried to comeback and scored the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half. However, another goal late in the second half helped the Wildcats defeat the hometown Warriors by a score of 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.

With the surprising loss, Webber fell to 7-3 overall on the season and 1-2 in The Sun Conference while Johnson & Wales earned its first win of the entire season and improved to 1-4 overall and 1-1 in conference. It was the third loss in a row for the Warriors against the Wildcats after Webber had won each of the first eight matches in the series between the two teams.

Webber was outshot 10-4 in the first half and held to without a shot on goal in the period while JWU got on the board first with less than two minutes to go in the half.

The Warriors, however, answered with an unassisted goal by Matheus Gomes less than two minutes into the second half and looked like they might be able to complete the comeback.

However, the Wildcats' defense held tough and limited Webber to only two more shots the rest of the way.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, JWU's Lucas Colodrero scored what would be the match-winner in the 76th minute following a corner kick by Nicolas Gomez.

In the end, Webber was outshot a whopping 28-7 overall and 11-2 in shots on goal.

Webber's freshman goalkeeper, Felipe Freiria, made nine saves, but it was not enough as the Warriors were simply unable to get enough looks at the goal offensively.

Mateo Fernandez Sassoni and Quam Salami headed the Warriors' offensive effort with two shots each.

"Today was an unlucky loss for the boys," spoke Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "They worked hard, but now they need to put in that same effort on Wednesday and hope for a win."

Next up, Webber will conclude its four-match home stand with a Sun Conference battle against Thomas University at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 9.
