BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 16, 2019) –
Brianda Valdez had 10 assists and
Jessica Terry had 10 digs, but it came in a losing effort as the Webber International University women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-23) against Southeastern University on Wednesday night inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
In addition to Valdez and Terry's numbers,
Kalameli Matautia had seven kills, seven digs and two service aces,
Svenja Koenig had four kills and three blocks,
Madelyn Glouner had four kills and two blocks,
Swey Brown had two blocks,
Salla Rautiainen had six assists, and
McKinzie Maloney had eight digs.
In the first set, Webber never led and fell behind 11-2 but then battled back to down 14-11 after a 9-3 run featuring three kills by Matautia. Unfortunately, after an attack error by the Fire made it a four-point margin at 16-12, Southeastern finished off the set by winning each of the next nine points, the first five of which came via Warrior attack errors.
In the second set, Webber again never led but kept the score close until Southeastern turned a slim 15-14 advantage into a 19-14 lead, the largest lead for the Fire in the set. From there, the Warriors got back to within four three times at 19-15, 20-16 and 22-18 but could not get any closer.
The final set saw the Warriors take their first lead of the night at 3-1 early on.
Then, Webber took the lead back at 9-8 after three straight kills by Glouner,
RayGene Garner and Matautia.
Webber led again at 10-9 after another kill by Garner, and then led 14-13, the Warriors' last lead of the match, after an SEU attack error.
SEU countered with an 8-1 run to jump ahead by six at 21-15.
The Warriors, however, continued to battle hard and put together a late push to stay within three at 21-18 and again at 23-20.
Then, after a kill by Koenig and back-to-back attack errors by the Fire, the Warriors were down by only one at 24-23 and were threatening to come all the way back before the final kill by SEU came in timely fashion for the visiting team.
With what was its seventh time being swept in a row, Webber is now 6-13 overall on the season and 2-8 in The Sun Conference while Southeastern, which began the night tied for third in the conference, improved to 15-6 overall and 7-3 in the league.
The Warriors will remain at home for their next matchup, which comes on Saturday, October 19, against Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m. inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center. The first meeting between Webber and JWU earlier this season back on September 14 was a 3-1 victory for the Warriors in North Miami, Florida.
