BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 19, 2019) – Behind the second double-double of the season by senior
Kalameli Matautia, both of which have come against the Wildcats, the Webber International University women's volleyball team got back into the win column with a big 3-0 (25-20, 28-26, 25-19) sweep on its home court over Johnson & Wales University on Saturday.
It was the second win of the 2019 season for Webber women's volleyball (7-13 overall, 3-8 The Sun Conference) over Johnson & Wales (9-13, 2-8), accounting for two of the Warriors' three victories in The Sun Conference so far.
The win also improved the Warriors' record against the Wildcats to 8-0 all-time with six sweeps dating back to 2016 when the series began.
In addition to Matautia's impressive stat line of 12 kills, 10 digs, and three assists, other standouts for Webber were
Svenja Koenig,
Madelyn Glouner,
Brianda Valdez,
Laura Embry,
Jessica Terry,
McKinzie Maloney and
Swey Brown.
Koenig finished with nine kills, a very strong .400 attack percentage, and two blocks. Glouner finished with seven kills, nine digs and three blocks.
Valdez finished with a match-high 13 assists and also had a career-high five service aces, three kills and three digs. Embry finished one dig behind Valdez with 12 and added five digs and three service aces.
Defensively, Terry led the way with a team-best 13 digs while Maloney had seven digs and two service aces and Brown added two blocks.
As a team, the Warriors finished with 14 more kills than JWU (39-25) and had a season-high 12 service aces to go along with five blocks. In all, there was a combined 21 aces between the two teams.
"Our Warriors have been working on being more aggressive with the attack and serve," said Webber's Head Coach
Gretchen Hand. "We were able to show improvement from our work in practice, and we look forward to each match and improving along the way."
In the first set, Webber took its first lead of the match at 14-12 after a 6-0 run featuring two service aces by Valdez and two kills by Koenig. From there, Webber led 21-15 after a 5-0 run before JWU closed the gap to 23-20 late in the set. The Warriors would go on to win the set 25-20 after a Wildcats' service error and a kill by
Samantha Davila.
The second set went back-and-forth until the Warriors went up by five at 18-13 following another 6-0 run featuring two kills by Koenig.
Then, after a kill by Matautia gave the Warriors match point at 24-19, that is where things got interesting as the Wildcats rattled off six straight points of their own to jump ahead 25-24 and put a scare into the home crowd.
Fortunately, the Warriors dug down deep and went ahead 26-25 after back-to-back kills by Terry and Embry; and then after a kill by the Wildcats tied it at 26-26, a big kill by Koenig followed by a JWU attack error gave Webber the 2-0 set advantage.
It was the second time this season Webber and JWU finished a set with the Warriors winning 28-26.
The final set saw the Warriors jump ahead 13-3 after a staggering 11-1 run, which concluded with the Warriors winning eight points in a row. However, with the home team leading 15-6, the Wildcats answered with eight points of their own to jumpstart a 10-1 run and tie the set at 16 points apiece.
From there, Webber again had to dig down deep to answer the bell, and the Warriors did just that as three straight service aces by Valdez and a kill by Valdez capped a 5-0 run to make it 21-16 and kickoff a 9-3 Warrior run that was finished off with a kill from Matautia to end the match.
Next up, Webber will look for revenge against Crooked Lake rival Warner University inside the Royals' gymnasium on Wednesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. The first meeting between Webber and Warner back on September 18 of this year was a 3-1 victory for the visiting Royals inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
