BABSON PARK, Fla. (October 16, 2019) – In what was Senior Day for the Warriors'
Megan Warner,
Francesca Mascali and
Sienna Scully, the Webber International University women's soccer team beat Ave Maria University by the slimmest of margins, 2-1, in a match that was also the first ever official soccer match played on the new Warrior Turf Field.
The match-winning goal for the Warriors come from one of those seniors,
Megan Warner, on the assist in the box from
Angelina Conde in the 60th minute.
It was the team-leading seventh goal of the season and third match-winning goal for Warner, a senior from Watford, England, who led Webber with six shot attempts and five shots on goal on Wednesday.
The first goal of the match for Webber came from junior
Leah Borders on a shot to the lower corner less than seven minutes in on the assist down the line from another senior,
Sienna Scully.
It was the first point of the year for Scully, a senior from Perth, Australia, who is competing in her first and only season as a Warrior.
Webber's final senior,
Francesca Mascali, who is from Tampa, Florida, and is the only senor for Webber this year that has spent her entire four-year collegiate career with the Warriors, finished the match with two shot attempts.
Other Warriors with multiple shots on Wednesday were
Hannah Vigotty with three and Conde, Borders and
Genesis Nogueras each with two.
In all, the Warriors outshot the Gyrenes 21-8 overall and 13-8 in shots on goal, but a desperation shot from Ave Maria outside the 18-yard box nearly went in with less than 10 seconds left, but fortunately a leaping
Natalie Bartek made the save.
Bartek finished with five saves on the match and allowed only one goal, which came in the 16th minute to make it 1-1 at the time. Four of Bartek's five stops came in the first half as she improved her record to 3-1 on the season as a freshman.
The victory snapped a three-match scoreless streak for the Warriors as Webber improved to 5-5-1 overall on the season and 2-5 in The Sun Conference. Ave Maria, meanwhile, fell to 1-11 overall and 0-5 in the conference.
Webber's next match will come next week with its final nonconference match of the season as the Warriors travel to Hialeah, Florida, to battle Florida National University at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 23.
