BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 5, 2019) – The Webber International University women's basketball team put up a great fight against a team undefeated in Sun Conference action, but ultimately double-doubles by both
Paris Copeland and
Taniya Patrick would not be enough as the Warriors fell to Florida Memorial University 87-72 on Saturday afternoon inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
Copeland, a sophomore from Lakeland, Florida, finished with 31 points and 14 rebounds, a career-high in both categories, and recorded her first career double-double while Patrick had 11 points and 11 boards for her sixth double-double as a true freshman.
Briana Williams also added eight points and six assists, and
Breyonna Reed had six points with seven assists.
Emmarrie Carmen and
Abby Unis each approached a double-double as well as Carmen finished with nine points and seven rebounds while Unis had seven points, nine boards and two blocks.
Despite only shooting 28.6 percent from the field in the first quarter, Webber (6-9 overall, 1-6 The Sun Conference) led 16-13 after the opening 10 minutes thanks in large part to holding Florida Memorial (12-4, 7-0) to only a 2-of-12 mark from 3-point range in the period.
Things were similar in the third period as the Warriors limited the Lions to only one make on eight 3-point tries in that quarter as Webber outscored FMU 26-19 to trim a 14-point halftime deficit (41-27) down to seven at 60-53.
Unfortunately, Webber could not prevent an FMU squad that entered the game leading the nation in 3-point field goals per game (14.4) and in total 3-pointers (216) from hitting from three all game-long as the Lions went 4-for-8 from three in the final quarter to pull away.
In all, FMU finished 11-of-39 (28.2 percent) from three, well below their season average of 40 percent entering the game, which was second in the country.
Webber's 63 rebounds was its most in a single game so far this season.
Next up, Webber will remain at home for a 5:30 p.m. tilt against TSC foe Keiser University on Thursday, January 10. It should be a chance for the Warriors, who began the day on Saturday 1.5 games back from a potential TSC postseason berth, to move up the league standings as the Seahawks are tied with Webber in the conference.
