Women’s basketball drops overtime heartbreaker vs. Keiser

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 10, 2019) – In a matchup between two teams that entered the night tied in The Sun Conference standings, 1.5 games behind a potential postseason berth, the Webber International University women's basketball team came up short in what was also a commendable effort on Thursday evening. In the end, the Warriors fell to Keiser University 70-64 in overtime inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Paris Copeland recorded her second straight double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Briana Williams also scored 13 points, connecting on three 3-pointers with three assists, and Breyonna Reed had what was arguably the Warriors' best overall game, recording 14 points with an 8-for-12 mark from the free throw line and with seven assists and three steals.

Despite not scoring until the fourth quarter, freshman Taniya Patrick still managed to make her presence felt with 10 rebounds and four blocks. LeAndra Franklin also made her Webber debut with six points and two steals.

In the overtime period, the first overtime the Warriors have played in all season long so far, Webber held leads of 60-59 on a free throw by Reed (4:07) and 62-60 on a jumper by Reed (3:15). Two free throws by Franklin with 1:34 left then tied it at 64, but the Warriors would not score again as Keiser finished 6-of-8 from the free throw line over the final one minute and seven seconds.

"We need to learn how to finish, it's a simple as that," spoke Head Coach Grady Morrell.

The Warriors battled the Seahawks until the very end and shot a strong 10-of-14 from the free throw line themselves during regulation, but ultimately, it was a couple of misses from the line down the stretch in the fourth quarter and a 3-6 mark in overtime that may have come back to haunt them.

Earlier in the action, Webber seemingly took control in the third quarter, opening the frame on a big 16-2 run, which culminated with a 3-pointer by Dysheka Price to make it 39-32 Warriors five minutes in.

With only a minute remaining in regulation, Abby Unis came up big with a block and an offensive rebound, and then the Warriors' pressure defense caused a Keiser backcourt violation with 40.8 seconds left, leading to a game-tying free throw by Reed with 30 seconds left.

Webber fell to 6-10 overall and 1-7 in The Sun Conference while Keiser improved to 8-11 and 2-6, snapping a four-game losing skid.

Next up for Webber in two days is yet another team the Warriors came into the day on Thursday tied with in The Sun Conference standings but now trail by one game, Johnson & Wales University. The Warriors and the Wildcats will do battle at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, in North Miami, Florida.
