Women’s basketball struggles from free throw line in loss at St. Thomas

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (January 3, 2019) – In what was the first of 13 straight Sun Conference matchups to finish off its 2018-19 season, the Webber International University women's basketball fell by a score of 88-59 on the road at St. Thomas University on Thursday night.

Webber fell to 6-8 overall and 1-5 in The Sun Conference on the season while St. Thomas, which entered the matchup as one of the hottest teams in the conference, won its 10th straight game and improved to 13-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference all while staying undefeated at home at 7-0.

Despite the Warriors getting to within 10 points of the Bobcats four different times in the third quarter, the last of which occurrence came with only 1:08 left in the period, St. Thomas came out in the fourth quarter on a mission and outscored Webber 27-10 in the period.

Additionally, despite shooting nearly 40 percent from the field for the majority of the game, Webber was never able to make the Bobcats work for it in the second half due to finishing the game shooting only 40.9 percent (9-22) from the free throw line.

Webber also struggled from long range to start, going only 1-for-7 from three until Dysheka Price connected on three straight 3-pointers late in the third quarter.

Webber's high-scorer in this one was Taniya Patrick, who started the game 5-for-5 from the field and finished 6-for-9 with 16 points. Breyonna Reed was next with a season-high 15 points on 50 percent shooting (7-14) while adding four rebounds, and Paris Copeland added nine points and a career-high eight rebounds.

The Warriors actually put together a solid performance on the boards, outrebounding the Bobcats by one as Montrese Weller added seven rebounds, Abby Unis and Thalia Jackson added six, and Brianna Williams had five.

Facing what was the fifth-ranked team in the country in offensive rebounding entering the game, the Warriors gave up 25 offensive rebounds and were outscored 30-19 in second chance points, a point of emphasize in this one for Head Coach Grady Morrell.

Next up, Webber will continue its long season-ending stretch of TSC games with a home tilt against Florida Memorial University at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 5, in Babson Park, Florida.
