Women’s tennis kicks off season with big win over Coastal Georgia

BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 23, 2019) – The Webber International University women's tennis team kicked off its 2019 season with an exciting 5-4 victory over the College of Coastal Georgia on Wednesday, January 23, at the Webber Campus Tennis Courts. The Webber men's tennis team, meanwhile, fell to the No. 22 Mariners by a final score of 6-3.

Both of the Webber men's and women's squads started off well and led 2-1 after doubles action, but in the end it was the Lady Warriors who held on for the narrow victory while the men's team managed only one win in singles action.

The win for the Webber women's team gave the Warriors a leg up on the team that was picked one spot ahead of themselves in the 2019 Sun Conference Women's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Warriors were picked fifth out of eight teams in the women's edition of the coaches' poll while the Mariners were picked fourth.

Additionally, the win for the Lady Warriors also served as a little bit of revenge for the Warriors after it was the Mariners who kept Webber from qualifying for the postseason last year during the final conference match of the season by the same score of 5-4.

For the Webber men, who were picked in a tie for fourth out of eight teams in The Sun Conference's Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll, the loss came against a team that ranks 22nd in all of the NAIA and was picked second in the conference preseason poll.

Notable Women's Results:

Doubles
  • The sisters from Germany, Emily John and Paula John, started things off positively with an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.
  • Isabelle Niehoff and Svenja Koenig used a tiebreak victory to win 8-7 (7-4) at No. 2 doubles and put the Warriors up 2-1 heading into singles play.

Singles
  • The first singles match to finish on the women's side was No. 1 singles, where sophomore Emily John was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Madeline Garner.
  • The third singles match to finish was yet another win for Webber from someone named John as freshman Paula John was victorious in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
  • The clincher for Webber then came at No. 4 singles when junior Jenna Fosdick defeated Paige DeLaPerriere 6-2, 6-4.

  • Words from Coach Otis Cutshaw: "It was the first match of the season versus the team that beat us 5-4 last year and cost us to be able to make the conference tournament for the first time in a very long time. Therefore, we knew what we had to do and this time we came out ahead 5-4.One thing about The Sun Conference is that there are no easy wins. We will take this and prepare for our next contest."

  • Webber improves to 1-0 both overall and in The Sun Conference while Coastal Georgia falls to 0-1 in both categories.

Notable Men's Results:

Doubles
  • Tare Mariga and Ivan Bondarenko were 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles, defeating Matthew Hulme and Ben Dolan. Hulme was named The Sun Conference's Freshman of the Year last season while Dolan was named to the all-conference second-team.
  • Hugo Hasegawa and Marc Schneider won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles to put Webber ahead 2-1.

Singles
  • Webber's lone win in singles action came from the first singles match to finish, No. 2 singles, as senior Tare Mariga took down Ben Dunn in impressive fashion, 6-4, 6-1, to start off his Warrior career with a win in both doubles and in singles.
  • Senior Hugo Hasegawa, Webber's returning first-team all-conference and second-team All-American player, was unable to break Matthew Hulme at No. 1 singles, falling 6-3, 7-5.
  • Despite the result, sophomore Marc Schneider put up a great effort at No. 4 singles, falling 6-4, 6-4.

  • Words from Coach Otis Cutshaw: "You know it is going to be a tough first match of the season when you play the No. 22 team in the country. We came out focused and with high energy with doubles and got a 2-1 lead. Give Coastal credit, I told the team that they are national ranked for a reason and they fought hard to get a 'W' today and we didn't make it easy for them. Hopefully we will get to see them again later in the year."

  • Webber falls to 0-1 both overall and in The Sun Conference while No. 22 Coastal Georgia improved to 1-0 in both categories.

Next Up:  The Warriors will also host another TSC opponent on Saturday, January 26, at 1 p.m. as Webber welcomes the Gyrenes of Ave Maria University to good old Babson Park, Florida.
