BABSON PARK, Fla. (January 21, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team rallied together with a true team effort in its final nonconference game of the 2018-19 season to defeat Trinity Baptist College 100-73 at home on Monday night.
Webber (11-12 overall) snapped its four-game losing skid by also earning what was its fifth straight nonconference victory. In all, the Warriors were 9-3 in nonconference games this season, and were 4-0 at home in such games. Trinity Baptist, meanwhile, fell to 7-12 overall and 0-10 on the road.
It was the fourth 100-point or more effort offensively from the Warriors so far this season, all wins for Webber. Additionally, five Warriors reached double figures and had solid all-around performances against the Eagles while three players set a new career-high in points.
Austin Evans scored a career-high 22 points on 80 percent shooting overall with six rebounds and three assists, and he also accounted for each of the Warriors' first 10 points of the contest. Next was
Kevin Grace, who also scored a career-high in points with 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including a great 4-of-6 mark from 3-point range and a perfect 6-for-6 mark from the free throw line while adding six rebounds.
Simon Fransis scored 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three;
Jonathan Philistin added a career-best 12 points; and
Rasheem Etienne scored 11 points with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Nicholas Blocker added six points and five assists; and
Nicholas Toledo had six points as well.
In all, Webber sank 14 3-pointers for the third time this season and shot a very strong 54 percent from the field and 45 percent from three.
Webber was also 20-of-31 from the free throw line compared to only seven makes on nine attempts for Trinity Baptist, and the Warriors also outscored the Eagles 37-8 on fast break points and 36-26 on points in the paint.
Webber trailed by as much as eight (27-19) halfway through the first half and did not take its first lead until the 5:25 mark in the period (29-27) after a 10-0 run. The Eagles' good start came thanks to 3-point shooting marks of 5-for-7 and 7-for-11 in the early going. However, after an 8-0 Warrior run featuring a jumper by Etienne, a 3-pointer by Grace and two free throws by Etienne put the Warriors up by eight themselves at 38-32 with 2:23 left before halftime, Webber would not trail again.
One of the key differences in the first half was Webber's 11-of-18 mark from the foul line while Trinity Baptist did not attempt a single free throw in the opening 20 minutes.
"It was a great team effort tonight," said Head Coach
Allen Corbin. "We had some ups and downs and will hopefully learn and grow from both. We have a huge week coming up."
The Warriors will be back in action at the end of the week, traveling to nearby Lake Wales, Florida, to take on their Crooked Lake rival No. 22 Warner University for the second time this season. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 26. In the first meeting between Webber and Warner this season on December 1, 2018, Webber fell by a score of 93-72.
