Men’s basketball no contest for No. 19 Warner

LAKE WALES, Fla. (January 26, 2019) – The Webber International University men's basketball team never really made it close, falling to No. 19 Warner University 106-86 on Saturday afternoon in Lake Wales, Florida.

In 12 conference games so far this season, Webber (11-13 overall, 2-10 The Sun Conference) has allowed its opponents to reach 90 or more points seven times, and has given up at least 100 points four times.

After leading 2-0 on two free throws by Rasheem Etienne, the Warriors trailed by double-digits (18-7) less than five minutes into the game, trailed by 15 (24-9) just over six minutes in and then trailed by 20 (34-14) just over nine minutes in.

A fast break alley-oop by Austin Evans from Tommie Luke cut the Warriors' deficit down to 12 at 43-31 with 3:51 left in the first half; and then less than 30 seconds later, Webber got to within 10 at 43-33 after two free throws by Jonathan Philistin, capping a 19-9 Warrior run.

However, with just under a minute left in the opening 20 minutes, Warner (17-7, 10-2) expanded its lead back to 20 (54-34) with an 11-1 run over only a two-and-a-half-minute span before entering the locker room ahead by 19 (56-37).

After facing a 23-point deficit early in the second half, Malik Morrow scored six straight points to get the margin back down to 14 at 67-53 with 14 minutes remaining.

Lastly, an 11-2 Warner run put Webber behind by 23 yet again (78-55) with 11:27 left, and then the Royals' run expanded to 17-4 to make it a 27-point game at 84-57 with a little over 10 minutes left.

Kevin Grace led the Warriors in scoring with 21 points as most of his damage came thanks to a strong 13-of-15 mark from the free throw line. It was the second straight game in which Grace has set a new career-high in points. Luke was next in scoring for Webber with 19 points and four assists, and Etienne added 10 points.

Saturday's game was also the first of seven straight conference games to end the regular season for the Warriors.

Webber's next game will be at home on Thursday, January 31, at 7:30 p.m. against the College of Coastal Georgia, a team the Warriors defeated by five (84-79) on December 8, 2018, back when the Mariners were receiving votes in the national coaches' poll.
