Women’s volleyball defeats Wildcats 3-1 in conference opener

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 8, 2018) – The Webber International University women's volleyball team defeated Johnson & Wales University 3-1 (25-12, 17-25, 25-14, 25-18) in what was both its 2018 home opening match and Sun Conference opener.

Coming into the match, Webber enjoyed a four-match winning streak against Johnson & Wales in which the Warriors defeated the Wildcats 3-0 in all four matchups.

The Warriors (7-3, 1-0 TSC) have now extended their streak over the Wildcats (4-5, 0-1) to five consecutive victories.

After a dominant first set, Webber was surprised in the second set by allowing a 16-3 run to JWU to tie up the match at one set apiece.

The Warriors came back from the intermission with a head of steam as a 10-0 run early in the third set sparked a quick 25-14 victory and a 2-1 set lead.

Trailing 13-8 in the fourth set, the Warriors returned the favor back to the Wildcats with a 16-3 run of their own to take the set and seal the victory.

"It's always nice to win at home against a good team," said Head Coach Lindsey Martin. "Although our focus and effort waivered at times, I am glad our team found a way to win today."

Leading the way on the stat sheet for Webber was Emily Bowen with 14 kills and seven digs, Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu with 12 kills, Brittany Taksas with nine kills and .444 attack percentage, Nayrelis Pantoja Santos extending her double-digit digs streak to nine matches with a very strong 29 digs, and Svenja Koenig with five kills and four blocks.

Next up, the Warriors will head to the West Palm Beach, Florida, to face off against Keiser University on Wednesday, September 12, at 7 p.m.
