BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 29, 2018) – Behind 20-plus kills by both
Emily Bowen and
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu, the Webber International University women's volleyball team earned yet another Sun Conference victory, defeating Ave Maria University 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21) on Saturday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The 23 kills for Bowen, a sophomore from Olathe, Kansas, represented a career-high while the 20 kills for Salanoa-Sagapolu were the most of her senior season so far.
In digs,
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos paced both teams with 24, and was followed by
Valerie Vargas with 17,
Hannah Tannone with 16 and Bowen with 13. It was the second double-double of the season for Bowen and was the fifth for Vargas as she also added 25 assists.
Last but not least,
Julia Ferraro finished with five blocks,
Jessica Terry added four service aces, and
Svenja Koenig had six kills and three blocks.
After Webber hit .368 percent in the second set compared to .000 percent for Ave Maria to take the two-set lead, the Warriors fell apart a little bit in set number three, falling behind 11-7 and never getting within closer than two for the rest of the frame.
In the fourth set, the Warriors led 20-12 before a 9-3 Gyrenes' run made it 23-21 Webber. A kill by Koenig followed by an Ave Maria attack error was all she wrote.
With what was its seventh straight win, Webber improved to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in The Sun Conference. Ave Maria fell to 3-9 and 1-6.
Next up, Webber hits the road for three consecutive matches beginning on Tuesday, October 2, at 7 p.m. across Crooked Lake against its rival Warner University. The Warriors and Royals battled to five sets back on September 19 of this year with Webber taking the win with a 15-5 score in set number five. Webber has defeated Warner in five straight matches.
