BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 26, 2018) – With strong performances all around, the Webber International women's volleyball team swept Sun Conference opponent Southeastern University 3-0 (26-24, 25-21, 25-18) in a battle of undefeated TSC teams on Wednesday inside the Sabbagh Athletic Center.
The Warriors improved to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in The Sun Conference, moving into sole possession of first place in the league standings.
In what was Webber's third straight appearance in The Sun Conference Game of the Week, the Warriors started the first set off slow, down 12-6 until Head Coach
Lindsey Martin called a timeout and made a few adjustments. The Warriors then went on a 14-3 run to take a 20-15 lead.
The Fire battled back to tie the set at 24 until the Warriors ended it with two kills from
Emily Bowen, taking the opening set and setting the tone.
The second set was again tight as with the two teams tied 17-17, the Warriors used an 8-4 run to take the two-set advantage.
The third set was a set of runs as the Fire started out the set up 6-1. The Warriors answered with a 9-0 run, and then again Southeastern battled back with a four-point run to tie the match at 10 apiece. Once again, Webber used a big run, this one a 9-1 run, to take over the set and cool off the Fire with a third-set final score of 25-18.
Coach Martin spoke after the match, "What a phenomenal amount of focused effort from our team tonight. We executed our game plan against Southeastern to perfection. I couldn't be more proud."
Leading the Warriors in kills was Bowen with 14,
Virginia Salanoa-Sagapolu with 10, and
Kalameli Matautia with six. Bowen also added a .364 attack percentage.
Assisting those kills were
Valerie Vargas with 22 assists and
Gilmary Ramos adding 10.
The Warriors also had three different players with double-digit digs. Leading the dig total was
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos with 21. Then
Hannah Tannone added 15 with Vargas following up with 11.
Svenja Koenig tied her personal best in blocks of five, a feat she has accomplished three times in 2018.
Webber won its seventh straight match at home and 10th straight over a TSC opponent.
Nationally-recognized Southeastern University fell to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the TSC.
Next up, Webber will take on TSC opponent Ave Maria University at home in the Sabbagh Athletic Center on Saturday, September 29 at 2 p.m.Â
