BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 25, 2018) – Tomorrow's important women's volleyball contest between two teams undefeated in Sun Conference action, Webber International University and nationally-recognized Southeastern University, has been dubbed as the conference's game of the week. The Warriors will welcome the Fire to the Sabbagh Athletic Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26.
It is the third straight week playing in the TSC Game of the Week for Webber (11-3 overall, 4-0 TSC), both of which were wins over Ave Maria University on Thursday, September 13, and over Warner University on Wednesday, September 19.
Webber has now won six straight matches and seven of its last eight matches entering the week. The Warriors have also won six straight matches at home dating back to 2017, and have been victorious if each of their last nine matches against TSC opponents.
Southeastern (13-1, 5-0) is the only other unbeaten team in the TSC, and is on a six-match winning streak of its own after its only loss of the season, a 3-2 decision to nationally recognized Reinhardt University. The Fire have only dropped seven sets all season and are receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 for the first time in program history.
The Warriors' calling card so far in 2018 has been defense. Webber is currently ranked second in the TSC in digs per set at 17.5, which is 38th in all of the NAIA. Webber's two-time and reigning Sun Conference Defender of the Week,
Nayrelis Pantoja Santos, is third in the conference and 28th in the nation in digs per set at 5.3.
Southeastern leads the conference in hitting percentage at .216 percent with Emily Kalmink holding the individual lead at .311 percent. Webber is second in the conference in team hitting percentage at .183 percent.
Webber's Head Volleyball Coach
Lindsey Martin said, "Southeastern is an incredibly talented team that has been very successful this season. We're looking forward to matching up our tenacious defense with their dynamic 5-1 offense. With such a strong opponent, we will be looking for consistent energy and focus on our side of the net, as well as strong leadership from our returning players."
The Warriors were picked to finish the second in the conference in the league's preseason coaches' poll, matching the Fire with four first-place votes but trailing by two in total voting points.
In 2017, Webber defeated Southeastern three times including an epic 3-2 comeback victory behind two sets to none in October and a 3-0 sweep in The Sun Conference Tournament Semifinals in November. Overall, the Warriors are 5-0 in their last five meetings with the Fire with three of those matches going to five sets.
