NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (September 22, 2018) – The Warriors started strong with a penalty kick goal from
Baxter Smith just over 28 minutes into the match, but the Webber International University men's soccer team later allowed three consecutive goals by Johnson & Wales University and fell to the Wildcats by a final score of 3-2 in their first official Sun Conference match of 2018.
After his second penalty shot goal in as many matches, Smith would go on to score again late in the contest to try to rally a comeback that just fell short.
The difference in the match came from a defensive mistake with just four seconds remaining in the first half when a Warrior defender fouled a Wildcat attacker to give JWU a penalty kick opportunity of its own.
The penalty kick was scored to tie the match at one goal apiece and gave the momentum Webber had back to Johnson & Wales going into the second half.
JWU's second and third goals came in the 58th and 77th minutes to take a 3-1 advantage before Smith scored his second goal of the match.
Assisting Smith in the 84th minute were
Kaleb Kelly and
MacKinley Burns.
The two scores added up to be Smith's seventh and eighth goals of the year in seven matches. It was also his second multi-goal match of the 2018 season.
"Once again we fought a great fight against a great JW team," commented Head Coach
Neil Cockburn. "However, our clumsiness on defense cost us another game as we gave away our sixth penalty kick of the season. The boys did have an opportunity to tie up the game from
MacKinley Burns who broke away in behind the defense twice and our high press allowed to get numbers up in advantage, but we did not capitalize on it."
The Warriors are now 4-2-2 overall and 1-1 in TSC action after SCAD Savannah cancelled its 2018 men's soccer season, giving Webber a conference win before the league slate even began. JWU improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in TSC play.
Next up, Webber will head to Thomasville, Georgia, on Wednesday, September 26, to face TSC opponent Thomas University at 1 p.m.
