BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 19, 2018) – The Webber International University women's soccer team won in its first Sun Conference match of the 2018 season and of the
Brian Fallon era, taking down Florida Memorial University. The Warriors did so in style, winning 7-3 including a hat trick by senior forward
Luiza Oliveira.
Oliveira scored her first goal of the 2018 season just 21 minutes into the first half. The flood gates would open from there as Oliveira would add her second goal in the 32nd minute, an assist in the 74th minute and her third goal in the 84th minute.
Oliveira finished with three goals and one assist, tallying up seven points on the match to move up to second on the Warriors in total points behind junior midfielder
Megan Warner.
In all, the Warriors would go on to lead the Lions 5-0 after one half of play thanks to the two goals from Oliveira, a penalty kick goal by
Francesca Mascali, a laser from outside the box from defenseman
Santina Paonessa, and a beautiful inside post shot from
Kassidy Vakiener.
FMU, however, did not give up, scoring three consecutive goals in a 14-minute span in the second half.
With all of the momentum swinging in favor of the Lions, Webber's most dangerous scorer in 2018 so far, Warner, answered in the 74th minute, sneaking a shot near post past the goalkeeper.
Before the goal by Warner made it a three-goal advantage, the Lions had the Warriors on their heels trailing by only two goals and had a great scoring opportunity stolen when Webber's freshman goalkeeper
Summer Simpson made an incredible save pushing the pall just over the crossbar with less than 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Webber now sits at 3-3 overall and 1-0 in The Sun Conference while FMU dropped to 0-5 and 0-1. The seven goals for the Warriors are the most goals in a match since defeating FMU 8-1 back on October 15, 2015.
"Today was a strong performance despite the recovery time frame after playing some of the higher level teams we played last week." said Head Coach
Brian Fallon. "All I saw were players who were advancing in their knowledge of the game and making every attempt to improve. Now it's on to the rivalry we face this weekend as we turn our focus to preparing for Warner and the battle over Crooked Lake."
Next up, Webber will play its rival Warner University at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 22, at Royals Field in Lake Wales, Florida.
