Men’s soccer ties Florida College in nonconference action

BABSON PARK, Fla. (September 18, 2018) – The Webber International University men's soccer team capitalized on a penalty kick in the 54th minute against Florida College to knot up the score 1-1, and the Tuesday afternoon match would end in a 1-1 draw after two 10-minute overtime periods.

The Warriors needed some momentum heading into the second half trailing 1-0, and that is exactly what they got when a Falcon player fouled a Webber attacker in the box giving the Warriors a penalty kick.

Baxter Smith was the name called on for Webber to kick the penalty shot, and he came through, sneaking the ball into the right side of the net and fooling the goalie to tie the match early in the second half.

The score was Smith's sixth goal and 13th point of the year. He is now averaging one goal and 2.17 points per match with at least one point in all six matches so far this year.

Just 13 minutes later, FC threatened Webber with three consecutive shots on goal but was shut down by Warrior goalkeeper Thomas Debladis.

Debladis made two incredible back-to-back saves and still repositioned himself to cause the next Falcon attacker to shoot high off the crossbar to keep the match squared at one goal apiece.

In the first overtime, Smith had a shot on goal opportunity two minutes in that was saved; and then in the final minute of the second overtime, a free kick by Roman Nielavitzky from just outside the box was shot wide left.

"The boys fought a hard fight against a tough Florida College team," commented Head Coach Neil Cockburn. "Thomas [Debladis] and the rest of our defense showed once again why we are so hard to beat. This is the kind of fight we need against Johnson & Wales later this week."

The Warriors are now 4-1-2 heading into Sun Conference (TSC) action for the rest of the season. The Falcons stay unbeaten with a record of 2-0-2.

Next up, Webber will head to North Miami, Florida, on Saturday, September 22, to face TSC opponent Johnson & Wales University at 2 p.m.
