GRAYSON, Ky. (August 25, 2018) – The Webber International University football team did not disappoint in its season opener against Kentucky Christian University. The Warriors were sparked early by
James Mallory's forced fumble and subsequent 55-yard return for a touchdown to get the scoring started, and finished with a 48-14 victory.
Webber (1-0) never looked back after Mallory's score, and went into the locker room up 41-0 after halftime.
The final score of 48-14 on Saturday was very similar to the final score between Webber and KCU in 2017, a 49-16 result in favor of the Warriors.
In addition to Mallory's forced fumble, sophomore defensive back
Davion Bailey caused another turnover, nabbing his second career interception, for what appears to be yet again, a very talented Warrior defense. Bailey and
Travonte Haynie each matched Mallory with a forced fumble while Haynie also had a fumble recovery.
In all on the defensive side of the ball,
Aaron Givens finished with 13 tackles, three tackles for a loss and a sack; and
Tyson Burch added 12 tackles.
Leading the way offensively for Webber was freshman running back
Davonte Williams and senior quarterback
Antwan Washington. Together they combined for all six of the Warriors offensive touchdowns.
Williams rushed 18 times for 78 yards, tacking on three touchdowns. Washington added to the ground attack with seven rushing attempts for 61 yards and two touchdowns. Washington also threw for 95 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver
Timothy Miller.
Miller ended his day with two receptions for 101 yards. His counterpart on the receiving core, senior
Jeremiah Harris, led the team with four catches for 44 yards.
Head Coach
Kelly Scott said, "We saw some good things today, although there were too many mental mistakes that need fixed. There is a lot of room for improvement, but it's always good to win".
Webber will head home to host its first home game of the season on Saturday, September 1, at 1:30 p.m., hosting No. 19 Campbellsville University, which fell 16-10 to No. 24 Faulkner University in its season opener on Saturday.
