Football beats No. 19 CU 45-9, moves to 2-0

LAKE WALES, Fla. (September 1, 2018) – For the second week in a row, the Webber International University football team displayed a paralyzing defense and an explosive offense, routing its opposition by over 30 points, but this time it came against a nationally-ranked team as the Warriors took down No. 19 Campbellsville University, 45-9, on Legion Field.

The score and stat lines followed very similarly to the week before when Webber (2-0) defeated Kentucky Christian University 48-14 in its season opener. This is the first time the Warriors have started 2-0 since 2010.

Webber outgained Campbellsville (0-2) by over 150 yards (413-260), outrushed the Tigers 192-91, and was five-for-five in the red zone.

After a three-and-out on the first possession of the game for CU, the great day for the Warriors got started immediately with a seven-play, 66-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard touchdown run by Kwamaine Brown, a sophomore running back who made his Warrior debut on Saturday.

After a touchdown by the Tigers on their next possession, the Warriors came right back down the field and finished the 15-play, 70-yard drive with a 20-yard field goal by freshman Richard Pettus less than two minutes into the second quarter.

From there, that is where things took off for the Warriors as on the ensuing kickoff, Keith Neal forced a fumble that was returned 23 yards for a touchdown by Travonte Haynie to make it 17-6 Webber.

After another three-and-out for the Tigers, freshman Brady Ooten came in to replace Antwan Washington at quarterback, and Ooten made his presence felt with a 19-yard pass to Jeremiah Harris and later on in the drive, a 48-yard touchdown pass to Timothy Miller to finish off a six-play, 67-yard drive with yet another score.

In all, the Warriors scored 24 points in the huge second quarter as Ooten came up big again, completing a 12-yard pass to Harris and a 38-yard pass to Miller before busting it into the end zone himself from one yard out to make it 31-9 Warriors three minutes before halftime.

The rout continued into the second half as Webber finished with at least one touchdown in all four quarters. Washington matched Ooten with a one-yard touchdown run of his own in the third quarter, and then Brown finished off the scoring with his second touchdown run of the game with less than two minutes remaining.

"We had a very good team win, but there is still a lot of things we can improve on," said Head Coach Kelly Scott. "One thing is very clear to me, we have the potential to be a very good football team."

In addition to his two scores, Brown led all rushers with 76 yards on 12 carries while Davonte Williams added 59 yards, also on 12 carries.

For the second week in a row, Miller finished with over 100 receiving yards, this time hauling in three catches for 106 yards and a score while Williams added three catches for 74 yards. Additionally, Harris showcased his advanced skillset with four catches for 41 yards, his second straight week with four catches, and three rushes for 20 yards.

It was also the second week in a row that Washington and Ooten split the quarterbacking duties with both players competing five passes. And while Washington added 30 yards on the ground, it was Ooten who shined through the air, finishing with 152 passing yards, one touchdown and an interception.

On the defensive side, three Warriors (Aaron Givens – 12; Haynie – 11; Tyson Burch – 11) made double-digit tackles while Givens also added 3.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.

Webber was also active in the turnover battle, coming away with interceptions by Burch and Tequavious Barnes while also benefiting from benefitting from forced fumbles by Neal, Tykevias Bailey and Colton Cormier. Burch, the NAIA's leader in forced fumbles per game a year ago, added a fumble recovery on Saturday.

After a bye week, Webber will look to continue its strong play against another strong opponent, hosting nationally-recognized Bluefield College, which is receiving votes in the NAIA's preseason edition of the 2018 Coaches' Top 25 poll, at 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 15.
