BABSON PARK, Fla. (May 22, 2018) – Junior
Hugo Hasegawa of the Webber International University men's tennis program has been named a 2018 Second-Team NAIA All-American.
In his first season as a Warrior, Hasegawa played from the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots all season long and finished 9-8 overall in singles, 12-6 overall in doubles and 5-2 in conference action in both singles and doubles. He was ranked as high as No. 24 in the 2017-18 Oracle/ITA NAIA Men's National Singles Rankings and in doubles, he and his partner were ranked as high as No. 10 in the South Region.
As a team, Webber men's tennis went 5-13 overall and 2-5 in The Sun Conference, the most wins in each category since 2015.
After leading the Warriors to an upset win over No. 18 SCAD Savanah in the team's season opener on January 27, the first conference win for Webber since April 1, 2015, Hasegawa was named The Sun Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week on January 29. He was the first Warrior to be named player of the week since Philippe Andermatt, who did it twice during the 2009-10 season.
One match later on February 10, Hasegawa teamed up with
Ivan Bonderanko to take down the No. 1 duo from No. 3 Keiser University; and then in his next match, Hasegawa kept his solid start going by defeating the top singles players from No. 22 Saint Thomas University on February 17.
Hasegawa's win against the Bobcats also marked the beginning of his season-long five-match winning streak in singles, and then later on in the season Hasegawa and Bonderanko defeated the No. 1 duo from NCAA Division-I Radford University as a part of a six-match doubles winning streak.
On April 18, Hasegawa was named First-Team All-Sun Conference, becoming the first Webber men's tennis player to earn all-conference since Niklas Kammer in 2013-14, and on April 27, he was awarded as the men's tennis team's Most Valuable Player during Webber's 2017-18 Postseason Tennis Awards Banquet.
