Tennis begins 2021 season with YTF Florida College Tournament in Lakeland

LAKELAND, Fla. (February 1, 2021) – The Webber International University men's and women's tennis team were in action this past weekend, kicking off the 2021 season with tournament action during the Youth Tennis Foundation Florida College Tournament, hosted by Southeastern University. The tournament was held at the Edgewood Tennis Courts in Lakeland, Florida, on Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31.

Webber's new Head Tennis Coach Trey Heath said, "It was a great opportunity to watch the players compete and see where we might be able to make some improvements moving forward."

Newcomer Jorge Cavero had the best finish among the Warriors in action, advancing to the semifinals of the Men's Black Singles bracket.

"Jorge has such poise, and you can tell his teammates appreciate the level and leadership he brings to the squad," said Heath.

Additionally, Cyrille de Hollain also advanced to the semifinals of the Men's Red Singles bracket.
 
Men's Black Singles:
  • After a narrow tiebreaker loss in the first set, Jorge Cavero came back to win 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) in a third set super tiebreaker in the Round of 16, and then he won 6-3, 1-0 (retired) in the quarterfinals before falling 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) in three sets in the semifinals, losing to the eventual tournament champion.
Men's Red Singles:
  • Cyrille de Hollain won 6-1, 6-1 in the Round of 16, won 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals, but then fell 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals, losign to the eventual winner of the bracket.
Women's Black Singles:
  • Isabelle Niehoff lost 7-5, 6-3 in the Round of 16 in the main draw, and then in the back draw, she won 4-0, 4-1 in the quarterfinals before coming up just short at 2-4, 4-1, 1-0 (13-11) in the semifinals to the eventual winner of the back draw.
