BABSON PARK, Fla. (May 1, 2018) – The 2018 Sun Conference Baseball Tournament has been set, and the fifth-seeded Webber International University baseball team will play against No. 4 nationally ranked and second-seeded Southeastern University at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 4, at FITTEAM Ballpark of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In its 25th season under the direction of Head Coach
Brad Niethammer, Webber finished 31-21 overall and 13-11 in The Sun Conference during the regular season with six wins over nationally ranked teams, including an 11-6 victory over then-ranked No. 12 and now-ranked No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College on February 4 and a 10-9 win over the No. 3 Fire on April 11.
In Webber's win over Southeastern during the most recent meeting between the two teams,
Tanner White earned the win with a six-inning, eight-hit and one-walk performance with only one run allowed en route to being named The Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week.
Alex Rodriguez and
Cristian Rivera each homered and had three runs batted in during the contest as the Warriors broke Southeastern's program-record 33-game winning streak and handed the Fire what was only their third loss of the season to that point.
"We are looking forward to the TSC tournament," said Niethammer. "We have our work cut out for us playing a very good SEU [team] in game one. We still have postseason [NAIA National Championship] hopes so it's important we play very well in the tournament. Tournament play is about getting hot at the right time and anyone is capable. That's what makes postseason play so fun."
2018 was the sixth straight 30-win season for the Warriors under Niethammer as Webber also tied for third in the conference standings and qualified for the league's postseason tournament for the third straight year.
After being ranked No. 25 in the country and fourth in the conference during the preseason, Webber maintained a place in the NAIA Baseball Coaches' Top 25 Poll all season long by receiving votes.
Despite tying for third, Webber will enter the tournament in the No. 5 spot after dropping its respective regular-season series against Florida Memorial University and Keiser University.
The winner of Webber vs. Southeastern will play the winner between third-seeded Florida Memorial and fourth-seeded Keiser on Saturday, May 5, while the loser will play the winner between top-seeded Saint Thomas University and sixth-seeded Thomas University also on Saturday.
