Baseball snaps Night Hawks’ record winning streak

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 6, 2018) – Backed by a strong complete game effort on the mound from Zak Spivy and a big fourth inning offensively, the Webber International University baseball team defeated Thomas University 7-1 in Sun Conference action, snapping the Night Hawks' 10-game winning streak.

The win for Webber (24-16 overall, 8-8 TSC) was its sixth victory in its last seven games, and it was also good enough to end Thomas' (24-18, 5-11) longest winning streak in program history.

Previously, Thomas had nine straight games with double-digit hits, including five outings with 15 or more, and had scored 12 or more runs in six of its last nine games.

That all came to a stop on Friday as Spivy (4-5) cruised early on, facing the minimum and allowing only one hit in the first seven innings. The only runners to reach in the first seven innings against the junior from Naples, Florida, were erased on a caught stealing in the second inning and a double play in the third inning.

In all, Spivy retired 15 consecutive batters until a hit by pitch and a two-out single in the eighth put runners on first and third, but Spivy came up big with his seventh strikeout of the game to get out of it.

Spivy would go on to finish with four hits, one run and zero walks allowed in nine innings. It was his fourth complete game of the season.

For the Webber offense, the Warriors would score all of the runs they would need in the fourth inning as Mark Martinez reached on an error, Manny Rodriguez followed with a single to right field and Chris Medina capitalized with a single down the left field line to score the pinch runner Langston Provitt from third to get the home team on the board.

After a sacrifice bunt by Jesse Coleman to move the runners to second and third, Marcus Begg was intentionally walked to load the bases, and then Alex Rodriguez doubled to deep center field to score M. Rodriguez and Medina to make it 3-0.

Quirino Esquivel then kept the pressure on, hitting a base knock up the middle to plate Begg and A. Rodriguez, and the bleeding continued with a single to left by Cristian Rivera and a hit by pitch by Garrett Martin to again load the bases.

Next up was the man who started the inning, Martinez, who scored Esquivel on a fielder's choice to make it 6-0 Warriors and force the Night Hawks to pull their starting pitcher, Dillon Rutland (2-4).

M. Rodriguez, Medina, A. Rodriguez and Esquivel were each 2-for-4 while M. Rodriguez scored twice and both A. Rodriguez and Esquivel had two runs batted in.

Coach Brad Niethammer said after the game, "Zac [Spivy] had a very impressive outing and we had a big inning, which was enough to secure the 'W'. We need to show up ready to play good baseball again tomorrow."

The Warriors and the Night Hawks will finish up the series with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, April 7, in Babson Park, Florida.
