Pitching leads the way as baseball finishes off sweep of Thomas

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 7, 2018) – The Webber International University baseball team defeated Thomas University in a doubleheader 2-1 and 8-1 in Sun Conference action on the Heart of Florida Field. The Warriors were led by very strong performances by starting pitchers Doug Pearl and Juan Terron.

After Zak Spivy's compete game victory with only run allowed against the Night Hawks on Friday, April 6, Pearl (5-0) followed that up with his best performance of the year so far, pitching a complete game himself allowing one run on five hits while striking out five batters with just one walk.

In the final game of the series, Terron (6-1) had a very similar outing as he pitched seven innings allowing just one earned run on eight hits, two strikeouts and one walk.

In all, Warrior pitching combined to allow only three runs, 18 hits and two walks all weekend against a Thomas team that entered the series with streaks of 10 straight wins and nine straight games with double-digit hits while scoring 12 or more runs six times during the stretch.

"It was a good weekend of baseball for us," said Head Baseball Coach Brad Niethammer. "We pitched very well all series, played solid defense and did a good job of putting quality at bats together. It was a much needed sweep in conference play for the Warriors."

Game one on Saturday was a pitching duel between Pearl and his counterpart Daniel Williams (6-4) as they both had complete games allowing just one earned run. The edge for the Warriors came in the form of one more hit than the opposition as Manny Rodriguez led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single to center, was moved to third on a hit through the right side by Chris Medina and then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly to center by Marcus Begg.

Game two featured more excitement offensively as the Warrior bats came alive with eight runs.

Webber answered a Thomas run in the top half of the opening inning with RBI singles by Medina and Begg in the bottom half, and then in the bottom of the second inning, Napo Ballestero doubled to left to score Garrett Martin and then the pinch runner Langston Provitt crossed home plate on an error by the left fielder to make it 4-1 Warriors.

Webber added a run in the fourth inning as Quirino Esquivel led off with a single up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch, and then in the fifth inning, the Warriors opened it up with three more runs.

John Shutrump finished off game two with two innings of one-hit baseball.

In the leadoff spot, Ballestero was 3-for-4 while Medina and Begg each added two hits as well. In all, Medina finished with four hits on the day.

The wins for Webber (26-16 overall, 10-8 TSC) gave the team eight wins in its last nine game and helped the Warriors firmly secure fourth place in the TSC standings for the time being, three games ahead of fifth-place Keiser University in the loss column. Thomas dropped to 24-20 and 5-13.

Webber will head to Lakeland, Florida, on Wednesday evening, April 11, to face No. 3-ranked Southeastern University at 6 p.m.
