THOMASVILLE, Ga. (April 21, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team fell victim to two close defeats against No. 14 Thomas University, falling 1-0 in game one after a walk off in the seventh inning and then dropping a 4-3 decision in game two due to a walk off double in the ninth.
In game one,
Stephanie Johnson (3-3) pitched her second complete game in a row, letting up just one unearned run on six hits, but unfortunately there was no run support by the Warrior offense.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Night Hawks scored the winning run on a play designed for the runner on first to steal second base with the runner at third also breaking for home.
Collecting hits in game one included
Daisy Riggleman with a 2-for-3 effort and
Marisha Bullard,
Meghan Lindell and
Laura Borders with one hit apiece.
The majority of the Warriors' offense in the second game came from
Victoria Atkinson, the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, and Borders, who combined for five of Webber's six hits and each had an RBI.
Trailing 1-0 after two innings in game two, Borders led off the third inning with a solo home run to tie the game and give Webber its first run of the day.
The Warriors added their second run in the sixth inning on a double to right field by Atkinson to score Bullard and take the lead at 2-1. However, Thomas answered in the bottom half, scoring a run of its own on a double and tying the game again.
Then, with the international tiebreaker,
Kylee Crews, on second base to start the eighth inning, Bullard bunted Crews over to third, and then
Alyssa Rodriguez reached on an error to score Crews and give Webber a 3-2 advantage.
Again the Night Hawks would answer as they plated a runner in the bottom of the inning to send the game to the ninth.
In the top of the ninth, Thomas held Webber from scoring, and then would score with two outs on a double to center field to steal the game and send the Warriors away with two heartbreaking defeats.
Staring in the circle in game two for Webber was
Raven White, who put on a strong performance pitching eight innings while giving up three runs, two of which were earned, while also not allowing any walks.
Webber dropped to 18-17 overall and 10-12 in The Sun Conference while Thomas improved to 32-10 and 16-4 on the year.
The Warriors will head to No. 20 Warner University on Thursday, April 26, starting at 3 p.m. to finish the regular season.
