Softball swept by No. 24 Warner in 2018 regular season finale

LAKE WALES, Fla. (April 26, 2018) – During its final two regular season games of the season, the Webber International University softball team lost a heartbreaking game one 4-3 on a walk off single in the seventh inning, and then fell in game two 5-0 against No. 24 Warner University on Thursday at Daly Field.

Webber had the lead going into the sixth inning thanks to a fourth inning triple and a run on a wild pitch by Marisha Bullard.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Royals scored three runs to take the lead 3-1, ending starting pitcher Stephanie Johnson's 20-inning streak of not allowing an earned run.

The Warriors answered back with a two-run home run to left center field by freshman Daisy Riggleman scoring pinch runner Anna Schutzler, who came in for Meghan Lindell, who got the rally started with a single to get on base.

The Warrior defense had some key highlights in game one. In the first inning, center fielder Laura Borders gunned down a runner at the plate saving a run. In the second inning, catcher Victoria Atkinson picked off the runner at second. Then, with one out and the bases loaded in the seventh inning, shortstop Cassidy Roberts made a strong throw from her knees to get the force out at home plate, saving the game momentarily.

In game two, the Warriors were held to four hits and were shut out while the Royals scored five runs off of Webber's starter Raven White (7-7), all on two home runs from Sara Bruno. Bruno was also the batter that had the walk off single in game one with two outs in the seventh inning.

Despite the five runs, White did complete the game, only allowing four hits and three walks while striking out three, but it was the two pitches that resulted in home runs from Bruno that did enough damage.

Webber dropped to 18-19 overall and 10-14 in The Sun Conference while Warner improved to 33-12 and 16-6 on the year.

The Warriors will now play the waiting game to see if their TSC record is good enough to make the conference tournament as the top six teams in the standings will continue on. Currently, Webber sits in fourth place, but could finish anywhere between the fourth and seventh-place positions depending on how the University of South Carolina Beaufort, Keiser University and Saint Thomas University finish during the final week.

The Sun Conference Tournament will be held from Thursday, May 3, until Saturday, May 5, at PFX Athletics (National Training Center) in Clermont, Florida.
