Softball comes back in game two to sweep Ave Maria in home finale

BABSON PARK, Fla. (April 18, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team swept Sun Conference opponent Ave Maria University on Wednesday afternoon at Nancy Nichols Field, winning game one 2-0 behind a complete game shutout from freshman Stephanie Johnson and then taking game two 10-7 thanks to a seven-run sixth inning.

In game one, Johnson (3-1) pitched her first collegiate shutout as a starter. Johnson allowed three hits, two walks and struck out four batters.

To back up Johnson with run support was Samantha Rolfe with a sacrifice fly to left field in the second inning scoring Madelyn LoCascio, and Marisha Bullard who singled down the right field line to score Rolfe in the fourth.

Game two was a much different contest as the Gyrenes scored three unearned runs in the top half of the first inning before the Warriors answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half on RBI hits by Victoria Atkinson and Cassidy Roberts.

Trailing 6-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Warriors' bats came alive, scoring seven runs in the inning including five without recording an out.

The scoring frenzy started with a leadoff double to left center by Atkinson, a hit by pitch by Meghan Lindell and an RBI single by Roberts that scored Atkinson. After a four-pitch walk by Laura Borders, LoCascio singled home Lindell with a knock down the left field line.

Continuing from her first RBI of the season in Webber's previous game against the College of Coastal Georgia (Apr. 14), Destiny Moye came up big with an RBI single through the left side scoring pinch runner Kylee Crews to tie the game at six runs apiece.

Bullard would then hit a two-RBI single to right center scoring Borders and LoCascio. Daisy Riggleman followed with a pinch hit fielder's choice to score Moye making the score 9-6.

To cap off the inning, Roberts hit an RBI single to score Riggleman for her third RBI of the game and capping a 3-for-3 performance.

Also in game two, Atkinson, the reigning Sun Conference Player of the Week, finished 2-for 3 with two RBI's and two runs.

Head Coach Laura Tucker said, "I am very proud of how our girls played today. We had great performances from our pitchers, and we found a way to get the job done offensively. We had a lot of different people step up and get big hits with runners in scoring position. I am proud of how our team played together and fought back to get the win during the second game."

The seniors, Borders, Lindell, and Megan Isoba, played their last home games as Warriors and finished on a high note with two wins. Borders finished the day with two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, and Lindell reached base three consecutive times in game two on three consecutive hit by pitches and scored a run.

Bullard was 4-for-7 between both games with three RBI's, a run and a steal, and LoCascio had one hit in each game with a total of two runs and an RBI.

Webber improved to 18-15 overall and 10-10 in the TSC while Ave Maria fell to 20-21 and 5-15 on the year.

The Warriors will finish their season on the road against the second and third-place teams in the TSC, starting with No. 14 Thomas University on Saturday, April 21, at 12 p.m. Webber will then finish the regular season at No. 20 Warner University on Thursday, April 26, starting at 3 p.m.
