BRUNSWICK, Ga. (April 18, 2018) –
Hugo Hasegawa, in his first season at Webber International University, has been named First-Team All-Sun Conference on Wednesday evening as the league announced its 2018 men's tennis honors at the annual conference tournament banquet, held by the College of Coastal Georgia.
Hasegawa a junior from Nice, France, transferred to Webber from ASA College Miami to join new Head Coach
Otis Cutshaw in his first spring season with the Warriors.
In his first taste of NAIA competition, Hasegawa made his presence felt immediately, taking down the No. 1 singles player and No. 1 doubles team from No. 18 SCAD Savannah in Webber's 7-2 win to start the season.
One match later, Hasegawa and his partner,
Ivan Bonderanko, moved to 2-0 with a doubles win over the top duo from No. 3 Keiser University, and then Hasegawa followed that up with a win over the No. 1 player from No. 22 Saint Thomas University. It was the start of a five-match winning streak in singles action for Hasegawa, who also took down the top players from Southeastern University, Warner University, Ave Maria University and NCAA Division-II Bentley University along the way.
"I'm very excited and proud of Hugo [Hasegawa] to be recognized by the conference with a first-team all-conference selection. When you play in the No. 1 spot for your team, you have to play your best every time out and go toe-to-toe with the other team's best player, and that is not an easy thing to do day in and day out. This is a great accomplishment for Hugo and for Webber International University being recognized for his exceptional playing. It will be a great building block for us to work from for next year."
Hasegawa's other singles victories on the season came against the top players from Iowa Central Community College, which at the time was ranked No. 25 in the NJCAA; NCAA Division-III Arcadia University; and Loyola University (La.), which was receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches' poll.
In doubles action, Hasegawa and Bondernako's season featured a six-match winning streak that was highlighted by a victory over NCAA Division-I Radford University.
In all, Hasegawa finished 5-2 both in singles and in doubles in the conference, and his overall record was 9-8 in singles and 12-6 in doubles, all from the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles spots.
Additionally, Hasegawa made the most of his first season in NAIA play by earning a national ranking of No. 24 in the 2017-18 Oracle/ITA NAIA Men's National Singles Rankings during the season and finishing up with a singles ranking of No. 32.
