Warriors refuse to quit in walk off win over NCAA D-II Chestnut Hill

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 8, 2018) – For the second straight day, the Webber International University softball team earned a walk off win. After Laura Borders provided the theatrics with a walk off single to center in the seventh inning on Wednesday, March 7, Megan Isoba, came up big with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Meghan Lindell in the eighth inning and send the Warriors to a wild 12-11 victory over NCAA Division-II Chestnut Hill College on Thursday.

It was a nonstop effort by the Warriors, who fell behind four times but battled back each and every time.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect in the top of the eighth inning, the Warriors turned a quick double play on a line out before a two-out rally for the Griffins led to a three-run home run to make the score 11-8. However, in the bottom of the eighth, Borders immediately made a statement, showing that Webber was indeed not finished, hitting a leadoff, two-run home run to left field, scoring Kylee Crews, to bring the Warriors to within one at 11-10.

After Borders was Daisy Riggleman, who singled to right field for her third hit of the game. Lindell followed with a hit by pitch and then a Griffins' error on a sacrifice bunt by Samantha Rolfe scored Riggleman and sent Lindell to third, setting up Isoba's sacrifice with no outs as Lindell timed her tag up and beat the throw home by the left fielder to send the Warriors into a frenzy.

In addition to being the second walk off win in two days for the Warriors, it was the second extra inning game for Webber so far as the team improved its record to 10-2 overall and reached the 10-win mark, an important goal for new Head Coach Laura Tucker in the early part of the season.

"The game was back and forth for a full eight innings, but our pitchers kept fighting and trusting their defense," said Tucker. "The offense kept hitting and finding ways to score, and overall it was just a great team effort. We found a way to get the win, and I'm proud of how our players refused to lose and never gave up."

It truly was a wild back-and-forth game as Webber scored in each of the first three innings while the two teams still found themselves even in both runs (6) and in hits (8) after three frames. In all, the lead changed twice in the first three innings as after Chestnut Hill (0-7) pushed across four runs in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of two Warrior errors, Webber responded in the bottom half with a two-run hit by Rolfe.

Next, after an error extended the bottom of the second inning for Webber, Crews hit a two-out, two-run home run of her own to tie the game at 4-4 before Borders singled up the middle, took second base on a passed ball and scored on an RBI hit by Riggleman to make it 5-4 Warriors.

Two more Warrior errors in the top half of the third put Webber behind again at 6-5, but the Warriors answered back yet again as Blakeleigh Boyett scored an unearned run after the first hit of the season by Anna Schutzler to even the score up again. It was the fourth unearned run of the game to that point for the Warriors.

After CHC added a run in both the fifth and the sixth innings, Victoria Atkinson picked off a runner at second base to end the top of the sixth and set up yet another Warriors' comeback.

In the bottom half of the sixth for Webber, Schutzler led off with a single down the right field line, scored on an RBI by Riggleman and helped set up an RBI situation for Lindell, who hit a single through the left side of the infield to bring home Cassidy Roberts to make it 8-8 and bring up the extra inning.

Crews, Borders and Riggleman, each finished two RBI's and two runs scored from the top three spots in the Warriors' lineup. Lindell also added two runs scored while Rolfe had two RBI's.

Riggleman, a freshman from Winter Haven, Florida, finished 3-for-5 at the plate while Borders, Lindell, Rolfe and Schutzler each added two hits. In all, eight different Warriors scored a run while six had at least one RBI.

Earning the win was Stephanie Johnson (1-0), who came on in relief in the first inning and finished with only two earned runs allowed in 7.2 total innings of work.

In was the fifth win in a row for the Warriors over the Griffins in the last three seasons.

The Warriors will return to action on Saturday, March 10, for a doubleheader against the 21st-ranked team in the NAIA, Grand View University, starting at 1 p.m. in Babson Park, Florida.
