Softball falls to No. 21 Grand View in doubleheader

BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team faced a very game No. 21 Grand View University (Iowa) team on Saturday, March 10, falling in game one 12-0 in six innings and in game two, 1-0.

The Warriors gave a valiant effort in game two with good defense and even better pitching by Sabrina Hebding, but it was not enough as Webber's offense was unable to support Hebding. One of Webber's notable defensive efforts came from freshman Samantha Rolfe, who made two nice catches near the right field fence in both the first and in the fourth innings to take away potential extra base hits.

Hebding pitched a full seven-inning game, giving up one run on five hits. It was her first loss of the 2018 season as she fell to 4-1 with a 1.08 earned run average.

After Hebding stranded a leadoff hit on third base in the top of the fifth inning on a fly out to Laura Borders in center field, the Warriors nearly scored the first run of the game in the bottom half.

Meghan Lindell led off the Warriors' half of the fifth inning with what was Webber's first hit of the day. Then, pinch runner Anna Schutzler moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Megan Isoba before she took third on a fly out by Victoria Atkinson, but was stopped from scoring on a very strong defensive play by the opposing shortstop to end the Warriors' threat and get Grand View out of the inning with both team's still scoreless.

In the sixth inning, the Vikings pushed across what would prove to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly to center with one out, and in the bottom of the sixth, and a two-out single by Marisha Bullard would not be enough to get the Warriors on the board.

The opposing pitcher of the Warriors in game two was the Vikings' Libby Yenger, who pitched a complete game shutout, only allowing two hits.

Yenger's strong outing followed teammate Claudia Farrell, who pitched a no-hitter against Webber in game one. Farrell is a three-time NAIA All-American who now has a 0.28 ERA through 25 innings of work, and is 4-0 as a senior so far.

Farrell's previous outing was against the defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma City University in which she pitched a one-hit shutout.

Webber dropped to 10-4 overall going back into Sun Conference play next week. Grand View, meanwhile, saw its record improve to 6-2 overall as the Vikings played for the first time since February 18.

The Warriors will be back on Nancy Nichols field on Wednesday, March 14, for a doubleheader against TSC opponent Thomas University, starting at 1 p.m. in Babson Park, Florida.
