BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team swept a doubleheader against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) on Wednesday afternoon. A walk off single by
Laura Borders to win 4-3 decided game one while
Sabrina Hebding pitched a complete game to pace the Warriors to a 3-1 victory in game two over the Crimson Wave.
Wednesday's games started Webber's 15-game home stand and were the Warriors' first games in 11 days.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh in game one, Borders came up big with the clutch walk off single to center field that that scored
Marisha Bullard to win the game. Bullard got herself to third base using a heads up play to take two bases on a sacrifice bunt by
Alyssa Rodriguez with one out, just beating the throw from across the infield.
Earlier in game one, the Warriors started off strong with a three-run third inning as
Daisy Riggleman led off with a double to right field to wake up the Webber offense. Then, with the bases loaded, a sacrifice fly to right field by Rodriguez scored Riggleman before
Meghan Lindell hit a two-out double to right center field to score both Bullard and
Samantha Rolfe to make it 3-0 Warriors.
Starting pitcher
Raven White had another good outing, pitching four shutout innings. For the fourth time in five starts this season, White did not allow a single run, dropping her earned run average to below a run a game at 0.88.
After the Crimson Wave tied the game up at three runs apiece in the sixth inning, sophomore
Dariyen Moss came into the game to pitch a strong seventh inning, earning the first win of her sophomore season.
In game two, Hebding stole the show, pitching her third complete game of the season and capturing her fourth win of the 2018 campaign on one run, seven hits and zero walks.
The Warriors gave Hebding all of the run support she would need in the second inning, putting two runs up on the board when a single by Bullard led to runs by
Victoria Atkinson and
Megan Isoba.
The Warriors would tack on their third run of game two in the fifth inning when Lindell singled in Borders, who stole both second and third base to set up the RBI opportunity. It was Borders' third steal of the day after she also stole a base in the first inning of game one.
Under new Head Coach
Laura Tucker, the Webber softball team is having arguable one of its strongest starts to a season in a decade (9-2 overall, 2-0 The Sun Conference). The closest comparable season would be the 2016 season in which the Warriors started off 11-3 and finished 31-16 overall en route to the NAIA World Series.
The Warriors will continue their home stand against Chestnut Hill College on Thursday, March 8, at
Nancy Nichols Field at 3:30 p.m.
