Begg continues tear as Warriors roll past Royals in game one before dropping game two

LAKE WALES, Fla. (March 30, 2018) – Junior Marcus Begg finished with two home runs and five runs batted in in game one to lead the Webber International University baseball team to an 11-1 win in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Royals Field. In game two, the Warriors led 3-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before a seven-spot by the Royals made the difference in what became an 8-4 defeat.

For Begg, the home runs in game one were his sixth and seventh long balls in only five games dating back to last Saturday, March 24, at Keiser University. It started with a no-out grand slam in the top of the third inning to make it 5-1 Warriors, and then two innings later Begg hit his fourth homer of the week on a solo shot to leadoff the fifth inning and make it 7-1.

Webber made it 10 runs on 10 hits with a leadoff solo home run by Cristian Rivera, his third of the season, in the seventh inning, and then tacked on another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to left by Mark Martinez to score Begg for a third time and bring the 10-run rule into effect.

In all, Begg was 3-for-5 in game one while Chris Medina was 3-for-4, Alex Rodriguez was 2-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored, and Rivera and Garrett Martin both added two hits.

Starter Zak Spivy (3-5) was great on the mound as well, allowing seven hits, one run and only one walk in eight innings to pick up his third complete game of the season and lower his earned run average to 2.24 on the year as a junior.

In game two, it was Begg who got the scoring started early for the Warriors, leading off with a walk in the top of the second and later scoring on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.

Webber then jumped ahead 3-0 in the fifth on a leadoff triple by Rivera, a double by Martinez to score Rivera and a double by Medina to score the pinch runner Langston Provitt.

The game two starter for the Warriors, Doug Pearl, was great in his seven innings of action, allowing only five hits and one unearned run with only one walk and eight strikeouts; but after the Warriors turned to the bullpen to start the bottom of the eighth, the wheels came off.

In all, Begg was 1-for-2 with a double and two walks in game two while Brett Kaminski added his second homer of the season, a solo shot to right field in the ninth inning.

Webber is now 21-16 overall and 6-8 in The Sun Conference while Warner moved to 23-15 and 5-9.

Webber and Warner will be back on Royals Field for the series decider at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 31.
