LAKE WALES, Fla. (March 31, 2018) – The Webber International University baseball team was victorious over its Crooked Lake rival on Saturday afternoon with an 8-4 win at Royals Field. Webber used a six-run top of the second inning on four hits and two errors in the inning to take an early commanding lead.
The Warriors also added runs in the third inning on an RBI double by
Michel Dagenais to score
Marcus Begg and again in the seventh inning on a solo home run to right field by
Jesse Coleman.
It was the first Sun Conference series win for Webber since last February as the Warriors nearly earned a sweep over the Royals if not for a seven-run bottom of the eighth for Warner during game two of the series on Friday, March 30.
Webber improved to 22-16 overall and 7-8 in The Sun Conference to at the moment, move into fourth place in the TSC standings, while Warner fell to 23-16 and 5-10.
Head Coach
Brad Niethammer spoke on the win, "I am glad we won a series. We needed that. We had one bad inning of baseball this weekend, and it cost us a chance for the sweep. We will get back to work next week trying to keep moving in a positive direction."
Scoring for the Warriors on Saturday were Coleman (twice), Begg (twice), Dagenais,
Quirino Esquivel,
Cristian Rivera and
Langston Provitt.
Napo Ballestero produced a 2-for-3 effort with an RBI while Coleman was 2-for-4 and Begg went 1-for-3 with a walk and scored twice through only three innings while stretching his current hitting streak to nine games.
In all, Begg was 5-for-10 in the series against the Royals with six runs scored, five RBI's and three walks while
Alex Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with three runs and four walks.

Next, Webber will head to Ave Maria, Florida, for a non-conference contest against Ave Maria University on Wednesday April 4, at 2 p.m. It will be the fifth total meeting and second nonconference game between the Warriors and the Gyrenes this season as Webber is currently 4-0 on the year against Ave while also riding a six-game winning streak in the series.
