WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 23, 2018) – The Warriors held an early 2-0 lead against the 13th-ranked team in the country, but three runs allowed in the final three innings sent the Webber International University baseball team to a 3-2 loss against Keiser University on Friday afternoon at Silvester Field in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Webber, the final team receiving votes in the latest NAIA National Coaches' Poll despite four wins over top-25 teams so far this season, fell to 17-14 overall and 4-5 on the season. Kesier, meanwhile, won its 17th of its last 18 games and improved to 24-6 and 6-5.
The Warriors'
Zak Spivy (2-5) was in control early on, facing the minimum through five innings while allowing only one hit through six before the Seahawks broke through in the seventh inning on a groundout.
In the ninth, Kesier loaded the bases with no outs thanks to back-to-back singles to start the inning, and then won the game on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Offensively for the Warriors,
Marcus Begg finished 2-for-4 with a double. Webber's other double came from
Jesse Coleman in the top of the first inning as he sent the ball down the right field line to score
Manny Rodriguez to make it 1-0 Warriors.
In the third inning,
Chris Medina grounded out to short to bring in
Garrett Martin to make it 2-0.
Martin and
Langston Provitt both finished with a stolen base as well as Provitt swiped a bag for the fifth time in four games and Martin got his fourth steal in the last three games.
The Warriors and the Seahawks will conclude their three-game series with a doubleheader that starts at 12 p.m. on Saturday, March 24.
