Begg homers three times as baseball battles to split with No. 13 Keiser to finish series

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (March 24, 2018) – Junior Marcus Begg had a huge day offensively, finishing with three home runs and five runs batted in while seniors Jesse Coleman and Chris Medina also connected on home runs to help lead the Webber International University baseball team to a tightly contested split against No. 13 Kesier University on Saturday. After falling by only one run on Friday, the Warriors bounced back on Saturday with a 10-8 victory before dropping the series with a 6-4 decision in the finale.

In game one on Saturday of what was dubbed as The Sun Conference's Baseball Series of the Week, the Warriors jumped on the Seahawks early as a double to left center by Coleman brought in Medina for the first run of the game in first inning and then Begg brought in Coleman one batter later for his first RBI of the day.

Webber then fell behind 5-1 after a four-run bottom of the fourth inning for Keiser, but in the sixth, Begg smacked his first home run of the day to left field and was followed by three straight singles by Quirino Esquivel, Cristian Rivera and Mark Martinez as Esquivel came around to score to make it a one-run ballgame at 5-4.

The Warriors tied it in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to left by Michel Dagenais that scored Medina for a second time, and then Medina crossed home plate again in the deciding eighth inning for Webber that featured back-to-back jacks by Coleman and Begg to make it 10-5 Webber.

Coleman's homer, the second of his senior season, was a three-run shot to right field while Begg again homered to left to finish with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBI's.

In all, Coleman was 3-for-5 with four RBI's and two doubles while also finishing off the final two innings from the mound to earn his fifth save of the season.

In the ninth, Coleman faced a bases loaded situation with only one out and a two-run lead, but was able to induce a fly out to right field and strike out the final batter of the game looking to help the Warriors salvage the series with what was their fifth win over a nationally ranked opponent so far this season.

Brady Mintell (1-4) earned the first win of his senior season with 1.2 innings pitched with no earned runs allowed.

In game two, Begg's third homer of the day, a leadoff shot in the second inning again to left field, gave Webber an early lead for the third time in the series.

Begg yet again made his presence felt in the seventh inning, hitting a double to left center that lead to a run by Coleman to make it 2-1 Webber.

However, similarly to Friday's opening game of the series, the Warriors were unable to hold on to their advantage in the late innings as Keiser scored four times in the seventh, all with two outs and the bases loaded, to go ahead 5-2.

It was the second four-run inning of the day for the Seahawks, who tacked on another run in the eighth inning on a double play ball that was turned by the Warriors to make it 6-2.

In the ninth, Webber attempted to come back and steal the series as Medina homered, Coleman doubled and Alex Rodriguez singled to left to score Coleman and make it 6-4. However, after Esquivel was hit by a pitch on the next at bat to bring up the potential go-ahead run, a swinging strikeout ended the series.

Begg and Coleman both finished 2-for-4 in game two while Begg was a combined 6-for-8 on the day and Coleman was a combined 5-for-9 with four runs scored. Medina also scored four times in total.

After entering the TSC Series of the Week only a half a game behind the Seahawks for fourth in the conference standings, Webber fell to 18-15 overall and 5-7 in the conference, but used the win in game one on Saturday to remain in fifth place ahead of rival Warner University. Keiser moved its record to 25-7 and 7-6.

"It was a disappointing weekend for us overall," said Head Coach Brad Niethammer. "We had an opportunity to win all three games but kept making mistakes and finding ways to lose close games. Once we start doing the little things again, we will start winning series."

Next up, Webber will return home to finish off a series with the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28. The Warriors defeated the Fighting Saints 2-0 on the strength of a combined two-hitter from the pitching staff.
