BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 21, 2018) – Junior
Tanner White earned his first win of the season and threw six innings of one-hit baseball to get the Warriors off to a good start in a low-scoring 2-0 victory for the Webber International University baseball team over the College of St. Joseph (Vt.) on Wednesday.
It was White's fourth start and was by far his most effective outing of the season so far as he recorded eight ground ball outs and eight outs on fly balls. White then gave way to
John Shutrump in the seventh inning,
Braden Peterson in the eighth inning and
Jesse Coleman in the ninth inning. Coleman struck out two batters in his inning and earned the fourth save of his senior season while Peterson threw a scoreless inning for the sixth time this season in seven appearances as a senior himself.
Webber's offense on the evening came via an RBI triple in the third inning by
Alex Rodriguez and a hit by pitch by
Napo Ballestero in the fourth.
The run in the third inning was kick started by Webber's go-to leadoff man
Garrett Martin, who led off being hit by a pitch before stealing second and then taking third on a wild pitch.
In the fourth inning,
Marcus Begg led off with a single and was followed by a hit from
Quirino Esquivel to put runners on first and second with no outs.
Cristian Rivera then loaded the bases as he reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to bring up Ballestero with the bags full and nobody out.
After a single and a walk with one out gave the Fighting Saints a glimmer of hope in the eighth inning, Peterson got the second out on a fly ball to center field and then the final out of the inning came via a strong backhanded play to his right by A. Rodriguez at first base.
Additionally, Martin,
Manny Rodriguez, A. Rodriguez and
Langston Provitt each stole as a base as the Warriors swiped four or more bases in a game for the 11th time this year.
Webber's record rose to 17-13 overall on the year while St. Joseph fell to 6-15.
Next weekend, the Warriors will get a huge road test in No. 13 Keiser University, on Friday, March 23, and Saturday, March 24. The Warriors and the Seahawks will meet up for a single game at 2 p.m. on Friday and then will play a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning.
