HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (March 17, 2018) – The Webber International University men's and women's tennis teams played a combined nine matches in six days during spring break tennis at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, which culminated on Saturday, January 17, against NCAA Division-II Northwood University.
In all, the Webber's men's tennis team (4-8) returned after going 2-2 at Hilton Head while the Warrior women (4-10) went 1-4.
The men defeated Iowa Central Community College 7-2 on Monday, March 12, and then came back three days later, falling to No. 17 Asbury College (Ky.) 8-1 on Thursday, March 15. Webber then bounced back with a 9-0 sweep over NCAA Division-III Arcadia University on Friday, March 16, before falling to Northwood 5-0 in a race to five points.
Hugo Hasegawa, who was recently ranked No. 24 as an individual in the latest Oracle/ITA NAIA Men's National Singles Rankings, finished 2-1 on the trip with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Iowa Central and a 6-1, 6-0 win over Arcadia both in the No. 1 singles spot. Against Asbury, Hasegawa fell 7-5, 6-4 to the 30th-ranked singles player in the country.
Similarly at No. 2 singles,
Ivan Bonderanko was 2-1 on the trip, winning 6-4, 6-4 against Iowa Central and 6-1, 6-1 over Arcadia after dropping a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second set of a 6-3, 7-6 loss against Asbury the day before.
Kyle Hall was also 2-1, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Iowa Central and 6-0, 6-0 over Arcadia both at No. 6 singles.
Freshman
Marc Schneider was 3-0 on the trip, winning the super tiebreaker in a lengthy 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Asbury while also winning 6-2, 6-3 against Iowa Central and 8-2 over Arcadia.
Lastly,
Lucas Bingenheimer also won twice, taking his No. 5 singles matches by scores of 6-3, 6-3 over Iowa Central and 8-0 over Arcadia.
In doubles, Hasegawa and Bonderanko went 2-2 in their four matches at No. 1 doubles on the week, winning 8-6 over Iowa Central and 8-2 over Arcadia while falling by a very close score of 8-6 both against Asbury and against Northwood.
On the women's side, Webber started off with a 6-3 win over Iowa Central on Monday before falling in four straight matches, starting with an 8-1 defeat to NCAA D-II West Liberty University on Wednesday, March 14. Webber fell to Asbury, which is receiving votes in the NAIA national coaches' poll, on Thursday before also dropping another 8-1 decision, this time to D-II Slippery Rock University on Friday, and losing 6-0 to Northwood on Saturday for its third loss to a D-II team on the week.
Jenna Fosdick led the way for the Webber women on the week, coming back with a hard fought 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) win featuring two tiebreak wins over West Liberty while also defeating the No. 3 Asbury singles player 6-2, 6-2. Fosdick also dropped two other three-set matches on the week, falling 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 1-0 (10-3) against Iowa Central and dropping a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-1) decision to Slippery Rock.
Impressively,
Isabelle Niehoff and
Svenja Koenig returned with three wins at No. 2 doubles after taking down Iowa Central 8-6 and beating both Asbury and Slippery Rock by a score of 8-4.
Next up, Webber will host D-II Franklin Pierce University at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20, before traveling to play yet another D-II team, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, in Daytona Beach, Florida.
