MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (March 17, 2018) – After holding on to win by one run the day before, the Webber International University baseball team was defeated in both games of a doubleheader against The Sun Conference foe Florida Memorial University on Saturday. Webber fell 7-0 in game one and led in the eighth inning of game two before falling 5-4.
After losing game one on Saturday, the Warriors needed a victory in game two to win the three-game series after coming out on top in a thrilling 11-10 victory on Friday night (Mar. 16).
Despite scoring two runs in both the fourth and the seventh innings and leading 4-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Webber lost a heartbreaker by a final score of 5-4.
After being shutout in the first game on Saturday, the Warriors took advantage of mistakes by the Lions in game two to put up two runs in the fourth inning after a passed ball and a throwing error by the catcher allowed
Jesse Coleman and
Quirino Esquivel to score.
In the seventh inning, Webber again took advantage of a Florida Memorial miscue as
Langston Provitt scored on a wild pitch before a
Garrett Martin single up the middle scored
Mark Martinez to make it 4-1 Warriors.
The Lions answered with two two-run innings of their own, scoring two runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to take the one-run advantage that the Warriors had no answer for.
In game one, the Warriors could not get anything going offensively as the starting pitcher for the Lions, Edgar Aparacio (3-0) pitched a complete game shutout.
At the plate, Esquivel led the way in game two with a 2-for-3 effort featuring two doubles while Martin and Provitt each stole two bases and Martinez added another steal. In game one,
Manny Rodriguez was 2-for-3 while the Warriors' other hits came from
Alex Rodriguez, Esquivel and
Cristian Rivera.
Webber is now 16-13 overall and 4-5 in the TSC. Florida Memorial improved to 17-8 overall and 9-3 in the TSC.
On Wednesday, March 21, Webber will host the College of Saint Joseph (Vt.) in nonconference action at 6:30 p.m. before traveling to West Palm Beach, Florida, for another TSC road series, this time against Keiser University, on Friday March 23, and Saturday, March 24.
