BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2018) – The Webber International University softball team fell in both games against No. 12 nationally ranked Thomas University at
Nancy Nichols Field, falling 11-8 in nine innings in game two after a five-run top of the ninth inning for the Night Hawks. In game one, the Warriors were shutout by a score of 6-0 and were held to only three hits.
In all, the Warriors found themselves behind three times in the first six innings of game two and faced two two-run margins before battling back to force extra innings.
In game two, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the second inning on a single to second base by
Cassidy Roberts scoring
Megan Isoba and
Meghan Lindell.
Webber added two runs in the fourth inning as Isoba ripped a single down the left field line scoring
Anna Schutzler. Then, after a single to right field by Roberts,
Samantha Rolfe would score on a throwing error to make the score 5-4 in the favor of the Night Hawks.
Trailing 6-4 going into the bottom of the sixth, Roberts, who already had two runs batted in to that point, added another RBI, scoring Rolfe for her second run of the game. Then, freshman
Kylee Crews came through in the clutch with a two-out single to center field scoring Isoba for the second time and tying the game at 6-6.
The Warriors would go on to leave the bases loaded in the sixth inning, and in the eighth, Webber moved the international tiebreaker over to third base, but could not capitalize.
After Thomas' five-run top of the ninth inning, all of which were unearned runs, the Warriors added two runs from a two-run home run by
Laura Borders to make the score 11-8.
Falling to 1-1 as a freshman was
Stephanie Johnson, who despite her first collegiate loss, performed admirably by finishing off the final seven innings of the game for Webber with only two earned runs allowed.
In the first game of the day, Webber collectively only had three hits as it was shut down by Thomas' starting pitcher Lauren West, who pitched a complete game shutout, striking out four batters and improving to 11-1 overall on the season as she also earned the win in game two.
Raven White (4-2) and Johnson combined to allow only one earned run for the Warriors' pitching staff in game one.
Webber dropped to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in The Sun Conference as Thomas improved to 18-6 overall and 2-0 in the TSC.
The Warriors will be back on
Nancy Nichols Field on Saturday, March 17, for a doubleheader against TSC opponent and No. 17 the University of South Carolina Beaufort, starting at 12 p.m. in Babson Park, Florida.
