BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 12, 2018) – The Webber International University baseball team continued spring break baseball with another decisive win, this time a 9-1 victory over West Virginia Tech on Monday night.
In what was at first a pitchers' duel between the Warrior's starting pitcher
Zak Spivy and the Golden Bear's starting pitcher Trey Dalton, the game eventually came down to Webbers' bullpen outperforming the oppositions' bullpen by shutting down WVT's offense.
Spivy pitched six innings allowing one unearned run, four hits, zero walks with 11 strikeouts while his counterpart Dalton pitched five innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
The Warriors relief pitchers
John Shutrump (2-0) and
Joey Cutrone finished the game for Spivy, combining for three innings. Shutrump let up one just hit in two innings of work and Cutrone closed the last inning not allowing a hit.
After the Golden Bears pushed across their unearned run in the top of the fourth inning, Spivy got out of the inning leaving a potential second run on third base, and then in the bottom half of the inning, Webber answered with an unearned run of their own to knot the score up at 1-1. The game would then stay tied until Webber added eight runs in the seventh inning to blow the game wide open.
After only coming up with two hits in the first six innings of the game, Webber's offense came alive in the seventh inning as
Manny Rodriguez smacked a one-out single to right field to jumpstart an inning in which the Warriors would bat around and send 14 batters to the plate.
M. Rodriguez's hit was followed by a double to deep right field by
Chris Medina, and then M. Rodriguez and Medina both came around to score as a wild pitch allowed M. Rodriguez to scamper home before a passed ball did the same for Medina to make the score 3-1.
The floodgates then opened up as
Marcus Begg came up with a bases loaded single to right to score
Brett Kaminski, and then a hit by
Cristian Rivera scored
Alex Rodriguez to make it 5-1.
Mark Martinez and
Garrett Martin finished off the scoring with back-to-back two-RBI hits. Additionally,
Quirino Esquivel was hit by a pitch in the inning for the team-leading sixth time this year.
Webber also had an opportunity to showcase its skills defensively throughout the game as in one such moment, Rivera made an incredible one-handed play on a slow roller to short to record the second out of the top of the third inning.
Webber improved its record to 14-10 overall on the season and is now 12-7 on the Heart of Florida Field, and West Virginia Tech fell to 6-16.
The Warriors will stay at home facing Purdue Northwest at 1 p.m. and Bradley University at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, in Babson Park, Florida.
