BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2018) – In its final two games of spring break baseball, the nationally recognized Webber International University baseball team also wrapped up a long 13-game home stand with a two-game split on Wednesday on the Heart of Florida Field. The Warriors started the day with a 6-5 win in eight innings to take game one over Purdue University Northwest, and then the Warriors fell behind early and were never able to recover in an 11-1 loss to an NCAA Division-I institution, Bradley University.
In a game that was originally scheduled for seven innings, Webber (15-11) scored four runs against Purdue Northwest (6-4) in the bottom of the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game, and then the Warriors walked off in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a single by
Chris Medina to score
Garrett Martin with two outs.
The Warriors' four-run fourth inning was capped by a two-out triple by
Manny Rodriguez that brought home
Marcus Begg and Martin, who in all scored three times in the game after being brought in during the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Media, who batted in Martin twice.
As a team, Webber finished with seven stolen bases against Purdue Northwest with multiple steals coming from Martin,
Quirino Esquivel and
Langston Provitt.
Earning his second win in a row was
John Shutrump (3-0), who held the Pride to only one hit with no runs and no walks over the final three innings. In five innings this week, Shutrump has yet to allow a run or a walk and has only given up two hits.
Against Bradley (10-4), Medina struck again with an RBI single in the first inning to yet again score Martin, who led off with a single, but Webber was never able to get much going the rest of the way before the game was stopped after seven innings. The Warriors were held to only one hit over the final six innings, a one-out single by
Jesse Coleman in the fourth, while the Braves put up 11 runs in the first four innings.
Joey Cutrone, Coleman and
Braden Peterson each provided a scoreless inning of relief out of the bullpen against the Braves as Coleman moved his scoreless innings streak, which dates back to February 17, up to 11.2 innings. Coleman, who now holds a 1.40 earned run average as a senior, has not allowed an earned run since Webber's second series of the season against No. 12 Georgia Gwinnett College on February 4, good for a streak of 17 innings.
It was the first time playing an NCAA D-I opponent since a 9-0 win for the Warriors against Ohio State University back on March 25, 2010. In all, the Warriors have squared off against three D-I teams in their history.
The Warriors will now hit the road for the first time since February 17, traveling to Miami Gardens Florida, for the team's first Sun Conference series since the beginning of the 13-game home stand on February 23-24. Webber and Florida Memorial University will do battle at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 16, followed by a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17.
