BABSON PARK, Fla. (March 9, 2018) – The Webber International University baseball team started off its week of spring break baseball with a 15-10 victory over Indiana University South Bend and a 12-0 win against Rochester College on Friday at the Heart of Florida Field.
After scoring six runs in the first two innings on three hits and leading 11-0 after three innings on seven hits, the Warriors finished up their scoring with 15 runs in the first four innings against South Bend, leading 15-2.
Leading the way for the Warriors was
Chris Medina, who went 2-for-2 with four runs batted in, including a three-run home run to left field in the third inning. Preceding Medina's home run in the third inning was
Cristian Rivera, who went 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBI's, and hit a home run himself, a two-run bomb to right center field for his first home run of his junior season.
Quirino Esquivel and
Brett Kaminski both went 2-for-4 while Esquivel added an RBI and two runs and Kaminski had one RBI. Additionally, Esquivel showcased his skills with the leather, adding two strong defensive plays ranging to his left in the first inning and again in the seventh inning.
Leadoff man
Garrett Martin also had a major role, getting on base three times and scoring three runs while
Manny Rodriguez had both an RBI and a run scored and
Napo Ballestero had two RBI's.
Starting pitcher
Doug Pearl improved to 4-0 on the season with five innings of work, giving up only two earned runs.
In game two against Rochester College, the Webber Warriors again scored double-digit runs, and Martin again led off with a hit as he continued to jump-start the Webber offense.
Although the Warriors hit extremely well, one of the biggest highlights of the game was starting pitcher
Juan Terron, who pitched six innings while not giving up a single run on two hits while also striking out an impressive 10 batters.
Jesse Coleman came in to finish the game for Terron, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Webber's offense was again impressive all the way around as it scored their 12 runs with five multi-hit performances and eight different batters collecting a hit.
Martin and Esquivel were both 2-or-4 with a run and an RBI, Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Coleman was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run, and Rivera was 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's as he again showed off his power, hitting a solo shot to right field in the fourth inning to make the score 6-0.
In their first at bats of the season,
Robert Lyons and
Kevin Snyder both collected a pinch-hit double and scored a run with Snyder also collecting his first RBI with a hit off the left field wall.
Webber, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches' Poll, improved its record to 13-10 overall on the season and is now 11-7 on its home field.
The Warriors will be back at the Heart of Florida Field facing West Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 12, for more spring break baseball in Babson Park, Florida.
