Men’s basketball suffers loss to Florida Memorial at home

BABSON PARK, Fla. (February 8, 2018) – The Webber International University men's basketball team led by four early on but had a rough night overall as the Warriors fell to the Florida Memorial University Lions, 92-70, on Thursday night at the Sabbagh Athletic Center.

Leading the way for the Warriors were seniors Osandai Vaughn and Johnathan Childs. Vaughn finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks on a 6-of-11 mark from the field, while Childs had 10 points and four rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting from the field.

The leading rebounder for Webber was Tommie Luke, who finished with six rebounds, five points and also led the team with five assists. The final Warrior to reach double figures in scoring was Austin Evans, who came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points (4-6 from the field), all of which came in the second half.

After leading 8-4 three minutes into the game after a 3-pointer by Vaughn and going ahead 10-6 after a layup by Childs four and a half minutes in, the Warriors then fell behind and trailed by eight (18-10) with 11 minutes to go in the first half.

From there, Webber trailed by 16 twice toward the end of the opening half, and then trailed by as much as 26 (86-60) with under four minutes left in the game.

Other statistical leaders for the Warriors on Thursday were Nicholas Blocker, who had nine points (50 percent from the field; 3-6), four rebounds and two steals; Joseph Serrano with six points (2-4 from the field) and four rebounds; and Garrett Woodmansee and Nikita Orap with six points and two 3-pointers apiece.

With the loss, Webber fell to 10-12 overall and 6-9 in The Sun Conference while Florida Memorial improved to 13-9 and 7-8. The Warriors remain one game behind the College of Coastal Georgia (15-10, 7-8) for the final spot in The Sun Conference tournament.

The Warriors head to Miami Gardens, Florida, on Saturday, February 10, at 4 p.m. to face ninth-ranked Saint Thomas University.
