MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (February 10, 2018) – The Webber International University men's basketball team overcame a 13-point deficit in the first half to take a double-digit lead in the second half, but in the end the Warriors could not hold off The Sun Conference's top ranked team and No. 9 nationally ranked Saint Thomas University. The Bobcats beat the Warriors by a score of 81-75 on Saturday.Â
Four Warriors scored in double figures as
Osandai Vaughn scored a game-high 28 points on five 3-pointers and a strong 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) mark from the field,
Joseph Serrano matched his career-high with 15 points on 55.6 percent shooting (5-9),
Johnathan Childs added 11 points on 50 percent shooting (4-8), and freshman
Austin Evans tied his career-high with 10 points.
Vaughn also added nine rebounds for a near double-double while Serrano was great all around with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Webber (10-13 overall, 6-10 TSC) led off the second half with six consecutive points to tie the game at 41-41, and then two ties later, the Warriors took the lead for the first time as a tip-in from Evans with 16:04 left in the game made it 49-47 Warriors.
Trailing 57-56 with 12 minutes to go, Webber went on a big 12-0 run to go up 11 at 68-57 after Serrano's fast break layup with 9:13 remaining in the game.
However, Saint Thomas (21-6, 14-2) began to chip away at the Warriors' lead a little bit at a time, and after a score by Vaughn made it 75-73 Webber with three minutes left, the Bobcats tied the game on the next possession and then re-took the lead for good with 2:38 to go. Saint Thomas would go on to finish the game on an 8-0 run.
Currently in The Sun Conference standings, the Warriors are one and a half games behind the College of Coastal Georgia (16-11, 8-9) for the final spot in the conference tournament with only two games left on the season.
The Warriors head to North Miami, Florida, on Thursday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. to play Johnson & Wales University. Webber will then come home to the Sabbagh Athletic Center for Senior Day on Saturday, February 17, at 4 p.m. against No. 19 ranked Keiser University, the fourth nationally ranked opponent the Warriors will face in their final nine games of the regular season.
