THOMASVILLE, Ga. (February 3, 2018) – The Webber International University men's basketball team struggled out of the gate and never recovered, falling to Thomas University 75-56 on Saturday afternoon inside TU Gymnasium.
It was an important game for Webber (10-11 overall, 6-8 TSC), which began the day in sixth place in The Sun Conference standings, but now sits just outside of the conference postseason picture in seventh place. The two teams the Warriors trail in the standings are the very two teams that have beaten Webber in its last two outings. Thomas (12-11, 7-8) sits in sixth place, a half a game ahead of the Warriors, and the College of Coastal Georgia (15-10, 7-7) is in fifth, one game ahead of Webber.
Senior
Osandai Vaughn was the team leader in points (21) and rebounds (6) for the Warriors. Freshman
Tommie Luke added 11 points and a team high three steals.
Webber never led in the game and trailed by double digits at 15-4 just over five minutes in. The Warriors then trailed by 19 (34-15) late in the first half, trailed by 18 (38-20), at the break, and then trailed by as much as 27 (51-24; 15:17 left) in the second half.
The closest Webber got in the second half was to within 16 at 54-38 with just under nine and a half minutes remaining.
Webber now has its work cut out for itself in order to secure a position in The Sun Conference Tournament.
The Warriors will face off against the Florida Memorial University Lions on Thursday, February 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Webber defeated Florida Memorial 74-72 in a gutsy win back on January 6, and the Warriors will have to play with a similar level of energy and passion this time around with their season essentially on the line.
