SYLVANIA, Ohio. (February 24, 2018) – The Webber International University men's volleyball team lost both of its final two matches at the Gray Wolf Invitational, falling 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-17) to No. 10 Lourdes University and then battling tough against No. 8-ranked Cardinal Stritch University before falling short 3-2 (25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 15-9).
After three straight sweeps against strong opponents, the Warriors fought hard against the eighth-ranked team in the NAIA. Webber won a back-and-forth second set, finishing it with a 4-1 run highlighted by two kills from
Chris Ludwig, and then took the third set with another 4-1 run to end it.
In the fifth and final set, Webber led 3-1 and 5-3 before five straight points for Cardinal Stritch made it 8-5. Back-to-back kills by
Liam Gilchrist got the Warriors back to within one at 10-9 before another 5-0 run for Cardinal Stritch finished the match.
It was a valiant effort by the Warriors, who were led by Ludwig who had 14 kills, two aces, five blocks and eight digs.
Other Individual leaders were
Zachary Ayala with 11 kills followed by Gilchrist with nine.
Jack Chernak led the team in blocks with six, while
Kyle Robertson led the team in assists (30) and added five digs.
In the first game against tournament host Lourdes University, Ludwig and Gilchrist each finished with six kills while Chernak had five blocks, Robertson had 19 assists, and both Ludwig and
Christian Alvarez-Rivero had four digs.
The Warriors (2-6) are headed home to return to Southeast Athletic Conference play against St. Andrews University on Friday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in the Sabbagh Athletic Center. Webber will host Campbellsville University the following day at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 3.
