LAKELAND, Fla. (February 21, 2018) – The Webber International University men's tennis team fell down 1-2 after doubles action but rebounded to earn its second win of the season with a 6-3 victory over Southeastern University on Wednesday at the Edgewood Tennis Complex in Lakeland, Florida. In reverse fashion, The Webber women's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches but fell 5-4 in a heartbreaking decision.
Hugo Hasegawa (6-1, 2-6, 6-2 victory at No 1 singles),
Ivan Bonderanko (6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles),
Marc Schneider (6-3, 4-6, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles),
Lucas Bingenheimer (6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles) and
Kyle Hall (7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory at No. 6 singles) each won their individual matches for the Warrior men as four of the six singles matches on the men's side went to three sets.
In the doubles action on the men's side, Hasegawa and Bonderanko were 9-7 winners in the No. 1 slot while Schneider and Bingenheimer fell at No. 2 doubles (8-6) and Hall and
Matthew Alexander fell at the No. 3 spot (9-7) in two close defeats.
Head Tennis Coach
Otis Cutshaw spoke after Wednesday's results, "After we fell behind in doubles and Hugo [Hasegawa] faced a third set in his singles match, I knew that outcome would set an important tone for the rest of the day as we had a few other singles matchups going into a third set, and I knew that if Hugo could pull it out, that would be a huge momentum swing for us."
Despite the tough start in doubles action, the Warriors nearly came back to sweep singles play as Alexander fell in a tight second set at No. 3 singles, dropping it 6-1, 7-6 (11-9 tiebreaker).
The Webber men improved to 2-2 on the season overall and 2-2 in The Sun Conference as Hasegawa and Bonderanko improved to 3-1 as a duo at No. 1 doubles. Hall and Alexander improved to 2-2 at No. 3 doubles while Hasegawa moved to 3-1 at No. 1 singles, Hall moved to 3-1 at No. 6 singles, Bonderanko moved to 2-2 at No. 2 singles, Bingenheimer moved to 2-2 at No. 5 singles and Schneider also moved to 2-2 overall.
In the women's match,
Isabelle Niehoff and
Svenja Koenig won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and
Alissa Riedel and
Juliana Fuentes were victorious 8-4 at No. 3 doubles to get the women's team's effort started on the right foot.
However, the Warriors would go on to drop three points in singles action in three-setters as
Emily John, The Sun Conference's reigning Women's Tennis Player of the Week, won her first set but fell 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Jenna Fosdick also won her first set before losing 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, and Riedel did the same, falling 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
The Webber women did get singles victories from Koenig (6-2, 6-0) in the No. 4 spot and Fuentes (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 5 position.
"I was a little surprised by our outcome on the women's side as winning doubles is usually a pretty good indicator of how things will go, but that was just not the case today as our women fell after winning doubles while the men were victorious after stumbling a little bit in the doubles matches," added Cutshaw.
The Webber women's tennis team fell to 1-3 both overall and in the conference while Niehoff and Koenig improved to 2-2 at No. 2 doubles and Fuentes moved to 2-2 at No. 5 singles.
Next up for the Webber women will be No. 20 Brenau University at 3 p.m. in a home match on Tuesday, February 27. One day later, both the Webber men's and women's tennis teams will return to Sun Conference action to host Crooked Lake rival Warner University. The Warriors and Royals will square off one week from Wednesday, meeting up in Babson Park, Florida, at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 28.
